DIY Algae Turf Scrubber

Hey again daytek,

I know you mentioned that your spray guard is a bike tire inner tube... I was wondering how often you have to adjust it if at all. I have a larger diameter PVC pipe with an open slit that doesn't seem to be cutting it as well as I intended it to. I've had to wipe off the light glass covers once every 1-2 days. Could you share with us your spray guard a bit more in detail?? I may try the same thing I'm doing now with a smaller slit in the spray guard but wanted to see if you had anything to say first. Thanks.

I built a scrubber 3 days ago from the inspiration of this thread and your video daytek. Same LED light on one side of the scrubber too. I took a video on day one of setting it up and wanted to share it with you... I am already seeing growth.

Hi, what did you use to make the slot on the PVC for the water fall and how do you attach the white panel to the pvc with the slot in order so that it does not slip out?

I used a dremel with a small drill bit, cutting a slot 1/8". I think most people attach the plastic canvas with zip ties but I followed Daytek's idea by leaving edges to hold it in place. Watch Daytek's video all the way through in the beginning of this thread.

Mine was about 0.5 for Phosphates and its now at 0.1 And the Nitrate was at 10 and its now down to 2 Tested using a Salifert test kit

Info nice I'm not real comfortable seeing a nations flag used as a work bench though. I'm not even British and it bothers me.

Yeah that kinda (really) bothers me too... I am not British either. Too many men have died defending their nations flag's to see one used as a workbench, merely to gain visual effect. Disappointing choice of props.

As for the scrubber, quality of the videos, etc. Nice work.

Hey Daytek and others on this thread,

Do you think washing the scrubber with freshwater, when cleaning, will do any harm to the algae that is leftover on the mesh?

As I clean it, there is always algae gunk stuck in the mesh, which will come off in your tank if you put it back on without cleaning . Currently I have been hitting it against a plastic bin and rinsing it off with a little bit of my tank water. I would prefer to just rinse quickly with freshwater but I don't want to do any harm to the algae.

I normally just give mine a rinse with freshwater and it just grows back normal, never had any problems doing it that way. But i think i read somewhere that if its a new screen you should use some of the tank water to rinse it off

Gotcha, good to know! Thanks buddy

Hi, great write up and video. I'm also thinking about making one. Could I also get a pm on the LEDs used ?
