DIY Hood Concepts

I've built a number of cabinets and hoods for people in my local club, and most are off a fairly simple basic design, 3 piece w/ a cleat and 1 x bracing.
Since I am a carpenter as it goes I rarely build anything for myself, but I finally did do something nice just for me.
I think it adds a nice flair design wise, and it incorporates using main lights to give a nice glow to the front glass panel.

My tank is in a wall so luckily you can't see any of what I have. The home made LEDs are suspended on stainless steel cables and are counterweighted. That blue container is loaded with lead pellets and just a touch under the fixture raises the fixture about 8"
All electronics for the LEDs are remote and any hardware is stainless steel as the tank has been in this enclosure for 37 years.

Anyone using this hinge on your canopy?

I too use these on stand doors but haven't used them is canopy. Should be ok depending on door size/opening direction. I'd say if doors open outward (normal cabinet configuration) they would work fine. Might not work so well if the doors open upward since they may not totally be able to support the weight and could fall shut.

This was my diy pretty simple but setup to be very handy.

I built these canopies out of 1in thick pine boards held together with biscuits and glue. MH+T5+LED with fans on either side to vent. I like the floating look.

I figured that since I have changed out my LEDs for a T5 setup I should update this thread. I replaced the LED supports with this:

The enclosure houses both the four T5s and my BML fixture such that the fans cool the lights without cooling the tank.

Complete:

This has notably dropped the evaporation rate this summer but I kept the hood fans so that they can cool the tank if it gets too hot.

Here's mine.

Before painting, staining, varnish and equipement installation.
