DIY Lagoon pics

Very nice! I'm designing a lagoon to be the refugium for my new tank. How many gallons is that? I had thought of putting a glass front on mine, now I know I am......

Ditto here Namor, I'm thinking of using an old 100g pond liner, nice shape, 18" deep in the deepest part, most is only half that, but the surface area is huge. Throw a surge or two on that and wammo... only problem is I don't think I can squeeze in glass on it.. *sigh*

That nurse shark is very lucky, it's getting a sweet home. I'll be watching this thread closely for sure. I would love to build some thing like that.

VERY NICE, I now hate my lagoon;)

Props from the Lagoon King himself ... righteous!

Not sure how "Shorttailed" your nurse is, but those get to 6' or so long. Just so you know:) They are pretty sedentary animals, though.

Looks great finished! I remember we spoke about the liquid rubber I used, awhile back. Great Job!

I used an Ultima filter on a 400g predator tank, with an RK2 skimmer. It worked awesome and never clogged up. Low backpressure too.

Depending on your bio loading, the Ultima will provide all your biofiltration, and you may not need the fluidized sand filter.

Maybe save it for building a denitrifier :hammer:

Thanks alot for all the comments and compliments! Ill try to answer all the question my best right now.

For the construction I will try to pull the pic from my other photo account (upload failure) and get them posted. I used 3/4" (not tempered) glass and siliconed it directly to the fiberglass. I then trimmed the access silicone to a fine edge and applied the rubber paint afterwards. The only reason I used the rubber paint was because Sweetwater Epoxy paint was 600$ for toxic shipping to Canada. I would not use the rubber paint again. It was nothing but hassles from the beginning.

To confirm my tank is 22" in the shallow and 26" in the deep end.

For filtration I have Two Ultima II 2000 filters and the RK2 fractionator, fluidized sand filter, 9lb of cheato and at least 400 mangroves.

As far as cost I spent about 900$ on fiberglass alone. Two full sheets over the entire tank, corners overlap probably a dozen times. Over all cost over 2000 probably under 3. Not including the RK2 system.

Is a denitrifier necessary with weekly backflushing of the Ultima filter and all other filtration?

I imported the shark myself and it is indeed a Pseudoginglymostoma brevicaudatum The species maxes out under 30" so they will be ideal for captive breeding which I hope will work out.

Good news on the shark:)
Did you use the thinner with the rubber? It helps make it more spreadable. The stuff is absolutely wicked, and like spreading snot, or octopus slime for those who know:lol:

With so much chaeto, you may not have nitrate issues.

No, I didn't use any thinner. I was not advised to by the manufacturer. I was not happy with the way it cured however. It is suppose to cure with a soft texture. The texture leaves me feeling really uneasy about all of the LR that is resting on it.

Hmm. I used Hecht Rubber coating from Aquatic Eco. They said you must use the thinner to apply it. It was still rather soft after curing. The tank was coated in concrete rockwork afterward though.

This is a great thread!!!

I will be building a 940 gal shark lagoon very soon.

I think I saw this same lagoon on shark and ray central.

Any suggestions you could give a fellow lagoon builder?

It is looking awesome!!!

H20ENG, I used High Build rubber paint that was recommended to me by a Biologist. Not what I expected though.

Reefer334, good luck with your build! Im interested to see what you have planned. Im still undecided how Im going to build my next one. I will have to do all the construction alot quicker this time- and while my landloard goes on vacation. :D And it is the same tank you saw on shark ray central. The whole build is on there.

How about cutting patches of pond liner to place under your rock and protect that coating. From the little reading I've done on keeping sharks, I know thier skin is extremely sensative and the soft rubber was probably a great choice in the end.

Bax, what I ended up doing is placing felt like pond liner under the rockwork. Im a little worried that the area under the liner would become anaerobic. Im sure you are right about the rubber being a good choice for the sharks. Im just not sure about the life of the tank.

ipodhommie, I dont think I am allowed to post links to other sites.
