DIY Reef Controller

Dre, u have the same tank as you, I'm building my lights now, just finished epoxying 214 leds Ugh. I still have to solder them all. I plan on doing the same thing with clouds and an east to west sunrise. That will determine how I solder the leds I have a coralux stormx controller that I will be using for the short time while I am building my controller. I have a due and a mega, I want to use the due for this project with a seven inch touch screen.

Andrew over at practicalmaker.com has a few fully finshed boards for Ph/Orp/EC I know he uses the uno but probally would work on mega as well and his controller is able to be controlled from online if your looking for that

I think it's dead.
The mainboard has some uses but without the knowledge of the ins and outs of it, it's pretty much a plain controller with-out a program. The pin-outs could be tracked down and used. This winter when my work settles down I'll try to figure it out.
I'm going to work on the original sketch with the mega and see what happens there.
I had the sketch loaded and kind of running. My problem was I invested in a 5 inch touch screen instead of a 3.2 inch screen. Since the libararies were written for the smaller screen it's a major pain in my but to get it to work. I had it running but alas I screwed something up and poof.......nothing. My touch screen doesn't read where I touch now.
I will try Aquaporn's sketch on my mega. I liked the interface.
Or, I'll go the Jarduino route. I think sometimes I'll just order the Reef Angel and throw everthing in a box...

... and setup the blues and white on 3 separate channels each as well as setup the remaining 4 channels for Violet , Deep Red, Cyan and Blue for full spectrum. I am thinking with a 7ft tank I would be able to have the sunrise/sunset move from left to right as well as have cloud coverage move randomly. Thoughts?

You can do that (just lights, not a full controller) with my sketch. See the 'Arduino Sketches' thread.

In the spirit of open source, anyone can build upon what Nick has already delivered, you don't need him to continue the project. Of course, you'll need someone(s) with the right skills.

Agreed. However, I don't think that we have a full set of pinouts for his boards or schematics to refer to. All we have is what is documented in the small amount of code that people have seen or the tinkering that people have done to figure it out. I think in order to continue this controller on would require someone to design some new boards to replace Nicks. Any volunteers? :)

What make us think it is an open source?
People are spending time, why it should be free?

So do open source projects pop out of nowhere, with nobody spending time on them?

I referred to open source because circuits were published in the open here without any copyright notice, right? Maybe no code was open sourced here. Anyway, anyone is free to take the circuits, figure them out and write code for them.

If you adopt an open source approach then you will be able to build on each others discoveries, and maybe produce something that works without Nick.

I remember the history of Jarduino.
At first it was free, then password on a .zip file and for some donation it is available.
Looks like Nick come to the same point.

I always thought Nick was a stand up guy. I never thought for a minute he would let us invest in him and his ideas, then screw us over. I was hoping Nick had some problems he was tring to work out.

After following the thread from conception I feel I am invested in this. The idea of me spending this time and money on components the wait times and all I feel betraid.

Seems now he has went on and was too chicken poop to be a man and let everyone know what was going on. I can say that I'm a grown up and as such I will let you know what's up, like it or not!

I wrote him a letter and asked if he was OK and please just email me and let me know. I was really concerned. I got no reply. After hearing jtmbtech was deleted from his friends list for posting a comment I feel certain he is fine except for his morals which seem to be damaged.

I will go back over this thread and gather information where I can then delete it from my thread list.

This will probibly get flagged, but not before it gets read a few times.

Seems I own a very expensive arduino board!

I'm slowly building up my own board. Using. 3.2 utft LCD and have temperature and ph working which logs data to thingspeak using a cheap enc28j60. Just trying to get ntp working now too.

Hi all,
I was going to do the website for this project, but for some reason all communication with Nick stopped, so I quit working on the website (some months ago) and moved on to other things. Oh well, not really too bent out of shape about it since all it cost was time (even though I had bought all the boards with components).

I know that there's a bunch of people who were/are really interested in getting this board (and this project) off the ground -- I was one of those people. That being said, I didn't/don't really have the knowledge to understand some of the things that were discussed in this thread, and I feel like there's a bunch of people who are in the same boat as I am/was.

So, since I'm downgrading my 65G to a 40B I'm going to take the opportunity and tackle my own Arduino controller. I plan on starting from square-1 and documenting the process along the way. My intention with the project will be to keep things as simple as possible -- allowing me (and possibly others) to focus on one specific thing at a time. Anyone who felt lost in this thread, or that the learning-curve was too great, is free to join me when I get around to it (probably next month or so).

I'll probably start the thread in the DIY forum just to outline what I plan to do. I would appreciate any feedback along the way.

Take care,
Tom
