DIY Stands Template and Calculator

Hey Guys,

I was hoping for some advice.

MarchWithTank.jpg

its for a 36x18x24 rimless Glass
70 Gallons

I would like a refugium in the bottom if that matters.

I have 5 inches on each side left and right.
and one inch space in the back, and four inchs in the front.

Should I add two more inside 19inch cross pieces?
I am still learning autocad so sorry about its crudeness.

just wanted to say thanks for the great info everybody. just got my stand made today. i got the basic stand built, going to skin it later. tanks fits on it great. it is 36" tall and built for my 58g glass tank. i built it out of 1x4's and this thing is super solid and not heavy at all.

yes no maybe so

12 pages and nobody has any ideas??

Firebreather - perhaps you could follow the plan and build an extension on the sides of the 5" you want? What you have is a new plan with load bearing being done by plywood(?) on the top? I've no idea if this would work. But it's certainly a new plan and far from the design developed here.

here is my stand. i built it using the original diagram and pics on this thread. thanks for all the insight and inspiration guys!!!

didnt quite turn out as i had planned but it will hold up a semi truck! still need doors obviously, the ones i recieved were not the ones i ordered, i might still use them i but i really wanted more simple ones.

.........i cant get the photos to load up at a decent size. do i need to host them on-line or pay for a membership on here to get decent sized ones (more than 50kb)

firebreather - that looks like it'll work. don't forget the nailboards don't touch the floor. they look like they do in your drawing.

Get a http://photobucket.com/ account (free) and upload them there. They allow pretty good sized pictures there and their software resizes them automatically for you if they're larger than what they allow.

And here's a tip for using their site, if you're just uploading a couple pics it doesn't take quite too long to send straight from the files off a digital camera, but if you're planning to upload a bunch it's worth loading up their bulk uploader program. It's built into the browser and runs a java app to upload the files. The difference is, uploading them normally uploads the full file size and it gets resized by software on their server, using the java based one does the resizing on your computer resulting in a much smaller file to upload. The difference in time it takes to upload on the average home connection (cable or DSL where the download and upload rates are considerably asynchronous) can be several minutes to even an hour if you upload for example 100 files at once from a 10MP camera.

Also, notice when you're viewing an album/file there's already the correct IMG tag in [] that works on RC.

Alright I want to do this with my new tank. It is a 120g 48x24x24. Should I use the 2x6 since it is over 90g or 2x4 since is it less than 6'?

Anyone else that did 120g 4' please, could I get the parts list and sketches.

Thanks all

ok, lets see if this works.....

these door were not what i ordered. deciding on whether or not to use them. i wanted a simple door, square frame, not router work, sharp angles.

this is a 4x2x2 stand by the way, i used a 2x6 header to be safe. it is 37" tall and a little wider than the tank because i wanted the trim to stick out past the tank.

How do you attach the purple to the orange (and likewise to the top)?

I am trying to figure out where i am messing up.

Gravity and they are screwed to the nail strips (green, which is screwed to the red and orange ones), I went one step further and used pocket screws on the top and bottom of the purple ones.

Awesome!!! Thank you Barry!

I just wanted to verify, Its very nerve racking being this is my first super serious wood project that I am going all out on so I wanted to verify.

I should have it done by tomorrow and hopefully stained tomorrow night!

Now, I noticed that some of the 2x4s are not smooth, should I take a sander and smoothen them even?

It was overbuilt to accomdate a 36" tank

AND a 48" tank.

Yea thats not going any where. As long as the tank sits flat and the stand sits flat I wouldnt worry about sanding unless the studs are so uneven your plywood skin wont contact the stand. Then I would sand ir plane them flush with every thing else.

how important is it that the posts touch the bottom of the top support. my stand seams sturdy but some of the studs arnt touching. it seems to me that they are being held together by the screws. im quite a newbie at woodworking and my stand isnt the simplest of tasks to do so bare with me. now the screws are construction screws able to take on 650 lbs per screw, i have three per contact. the stand is also skined with 1/2" plywood. its going to be holding a 112g, any thoughts if i might be in trouble or not?
