dmorel's 220 Round & Shallow reef build

Wow awesome build!!! Question, how strong are those frag tanks and sump racks? Did you secure them with screws? I saw those at sam's club and was think about using them to setup my frag tanks.

LOVE the build! I have been waiting for someone in America to do this.
I was lucky enough to buy a Superkaru spotlight from Koji Wada at this past MACNA. It is a really cool piece of equipment, but they are expensive.
Looking forward to your progress

Thanks. Love the superkaru's too :) You're right, they are expensive, but I think worth it at the moment for what I'm getting from them. I probably need two more and a dozen bulbs to have on hand!

That's a problem for another month or two from now though :)

Well the tanks themselves are rock solid, they are built by one of the local acrylic guys, best in town. The racks hold up to 800 lbs per shelf. These are from a restaurant supply company though, not a sam's club. I'm guessing they are close but... might want to double check....
We were going to secure them to the wall, but during fresh water testing realized there really wasn't a need, they are good to go as is.

Some updates now.

Things are going well. The bloom is starting to subside. I have a BIG clean up crew coming on Thursday to alleviate some of the little algae I'm getting on the rocks, but the sand isn't TOO nasty right now which is nice.
I also added another pair of tunze's for flow so I have 2 pumping one direction for about 15 minutes and then the other two switch and pump the opposite direction for another 15. There is a nice moment of crazy turbulence during the switching of the tide and then an awesome flow going. The second pump was necessary though, really makes a difference.

The skimmer is really starting to pull some gunk now. I'm still skimming really wet to pull as much of the crud out as I can.
A few fish went last weekend too to co-exist with my copperband and my little twin spot goby who moved from the last tank.

Tomorrow I'm getting an exhaust fan in the sump room to deal with the hot AZ summer. Controller is working great.
Only piece of equipment not online is the calcium reactor which will be done soon enough.

Now on to some pics.

First here are some equipment pics, a full tank shot and a shot that includes the false floor.
The floor still needs to be finished but it's framed out...

Next post, some top down shots!

Here are a couple of top down shots and other random coral photos.
I can't shoot photos to save my life, but my wife is trying to learn how to take good shots of this tank. I promise it is SO much sweeter in real life :)

Love the top down shots....one thing I notice is you didn't let the tank cycle?? Do you have any problems with your corals??

HAHA! I'm in the middle of reading your new build thread now! Sounds awesome.

I used a little over 220 lbs of totally cured live rock when I set the tank up, no cycle to speak of thus far. The diatoms so far are the only thing I've seen and they are already cutting back. Presuming silica from the sand is causing that.
My corals are all doing really well and with the water volume and skimmer I'm running I don't expect any issues.

I probably *could* have waited longer to see how it played out but I really wanted to break down the other tank and focus all my energy here so that's what I went for.

Hmmmm... something to think about. I'm also planning to use cured rocks but not sure if I've the guts to fill it within 2 days lol

Hey, to be fair it was really almost three full days before I put all the corals in :)
That being said...
I want to get on record saying I would never suggest to anyone emulating my reef keeping style ;)

I claim this;
IMG_1115.jpg

as MY drinking spot. What a great view to just sit back sippin some brew and waiting for the fish to come whippin' around the corner.

Looking good

I love the way you designed the setup. The spotlights are a great addition to the tank.

I have a cousin who works out in Japan so I will try and see if he can find me a spotlight to ship back.

Keep up the great work.

The raised floor is cool, adds to the top down viewing experience I am sure!

That tank is screeming for a half dozen or so tangs to patrol it!

Awesome!!! :D

Done! It's yours, now you just have to build the seat for it :)

We should talk in the next week or two about some ideas for the bench and I might be enlisting your skills to complete the false floor if I don't just go with some laminate stuff.

Let's get together soon.

Thanks SunnyX.
If you find out anything about shipping out of Japan to the US please do let me know. I'm working on my next round of importing stuff. Couple more spots and a bunch of bulbs so I have a supply.

something different/i like it!!

It is a bit different ;) glad you like it.
I wish the pictures came even close to doing the tank justice. I'll have to get a real camera pro over here to shoot a few snaps so you all can really see how nice it looks.

Awesome build! Do you experience benefits from the cornerless tank when it comes to flow?

Leonardo

Thanks Leonardo.
I do get some great benefits with the flow actually.
Two little nano streams get a full current rocking around the tank. I have a total of four and ramp each matched set of two up every 15 minutes, there is a nice minute of turbulence as the current switches and then it just rocks the other direction for a bit. It DID take matched sets of nanostreams to get it though, one was not enough to really get it whipping around.

It's working well for the looking down Bax you're right, thanks for the kind words.
I do have to be careful not hit my head though

Maybe not a half dozen tangs, but I've got my heart set on three.
Skip's on the lookout for the right fish for more.

Super awesome! What are your plans to finish the raised floor?

Glad you like it Shekki.
The floor will *probably* be finished with some laminate. MAYBE tile, or if Scott (woodwrangler who does amazing work) has some ideas maybe something completely different. But as of now, I don't really know. Wouldn't have minded just staining same as the tank's stand piece, but that's probably not actually going to happen.

Updates, put a vent in the sump room roof today, will see if that can keep the temps down a bit. Time will tell on that.
Skimmer is kicking into high gear right now.
Hopefully clean up crew tomorrow.

Also working on some more japanese imports, but that might take a while.
Funny thing today while I searching google translate came up with this translation for a description of a light system:

Marine pornographic plasma system.

I'm trying to figure out how many to order, because you know I need some of those
:eek1:

Classic! The Japanese are onto something...rebranding Plasma TV's optimized for porno. Does it come with bento digital set top box too?

Well congrats on the amazing setup! Its always fun and refreshing to see individuals trying something different. Maybe this (spotlights in the US) could be the start of the next new craze....are we over ZeoVit and vodka dosing yet??

Some new updated photos.

I tried to get something not so scaled down because the last batch of pictures made the tank look less than inspired.

First some construction updates...
I put a vent into the sump room, and finally got the new electrical and plumbing lines that were run on the outside of the house for the tank covered up...

A shot of the sump room from outside....
Note the change water is full this time, will be doing water change tomorrow AM before I'm off to Vegas... (a few of the hounds checking it out)

And now some full tank shots from various angles...
