Dmorty217's 625 Build Thread

What's your stock list and order? :)

My zebra eel and melanarus will go in today along with the clown soapfish. Then Conspicuous, false personifer juv, scribbled, CB Epaulette. Bandit, interruptus?, Bellus, Declivis, mitratus, black tang, blonde Naso and probably a few others but not 100% on that. The first 4 in the list will be in that order for sure then 2-3 at a time every 2 months if QT goes well. Haven't decided if I'm doing a group of something or not.

Thanks guys. I feel like less is more with this. Don't want to crowd the tank. Stress free environment is what I want to have for the fish and me! Maybe a misbar regal pair too

Derek, what is your QT process? I'm just having the worst luck in the world as I just lost 5 fish in a week to what looks like velvet. Of course the only 3 that survived this are the "cheap" fish.

MaybeI need some MEtal halide supplement lighting

I'm using modular T5 lights to fill in the gaps on my tanks, it's working really well. You could probably get 3-4 4' units and it would do the job on your tank. I have 2 on my 8x3x2 and it makes a tremendous difference.

I know that feeling. These fish all have been with me for years in my 220g but were recently put through CP and then watched. I wasn't worried about them having velvet but more about the 625g having something left over that killed the False Personifers... So far so good but it have only been a few days, Next week if everyone is doing well and not showing signs of anything then I will feel better. New fish from wholesalers or Online fish sources will get a Formalin dip upon arrival and put into Nitrofuracin green for 3 days and then start CP and PP. Or depending on if im only dealing with 1-3 fish Formalin dip, followed by Nitro, then TTM with PP and Formalin in between. Will do a total of 4 transfers if I use that method

I will look into that, thank you. The 1" think acrylic brace on the top is what is causing most of the issues

Are you using NLS ICH Shield for CP? Do you find that fish stop eating after they are in CP or develop any infections? Never used Nitrofuracin, is that an antibiotic?

No the powder form, I always buy a new bottle of it when I get new fish in since the meds date of production seems to effect the outcome of treatment. The pellets probably work but you would need to feed that and only that for months for it to work... and all fish have to eat it everyday. No fish have stopped eating on CP for me yet and no infections with the NLS powder, when I used the Ebay crap yes, lost $4K worth of fish over it! Nirtrofuracin is not a antibiotic but it helps with ammonia burn to gills and sores on fish, also is suppose to help with crypto forms but I'm not sure about that honestly. When I use to work at a fish wholesaler we would ship delicate fish with Nitro in the shipping water. More about just helping fish acclimate after shipping and provide a cure for common things such as stress and ammonia burn from shipping. Makes me feel better anyway. Its not good as far as health goes for us since its a carcinogen just like Formalin is

Do you run a cycled QT tank? It seems from research that nitrifying bacteria would cause the med to be ineffective hence requiring a non cycled tank with daily water changes and re-dosing.

With the fresh meds I don't notice the bacteria being a issue. When I dosed it on the 125g QT that had 50L of Sera in it the fish didn't live long enough to know if the CP would of been effective. I believe it would have since I did notice a change in behavior when I upped the CP to velvet recommended levels. I should of never Formalin dipped him at that stage but I was desperate and frantic, two things that don't mix well with good decision making. I will dose Startsmart when I setup the QT again and put fish in and dose CP. daily water changes aren't something I want to have to do. I'm already having enough problems trying to find a good source for salt and I'm trying to buy 20 boxes at a time!

Fosters and Smith has a big sale on salt right now. IO is $39 a 200 gal box, might give more discount buying pallet quantities. Always worth a call. Especially since you've been a regular customer.

If you're buying a pallet/or large quantity, your LFS should beat that price!

I'm pretty sure that F&S will as well. From the sounds of it Derek's having a hard time finding the quantities he wants. A company as large as F&S should be able to supply him and cheaply too.

You would think, but not so much... I have to wait until Instant Ocean puts it on sale the 2 times a years it seems that they do to beat $40 no matter how many I buy.
