should you keep pipes in pairs or do they get along alright single?
are there certain species that do better one way or the other?

I don't think they need to be, but I try to keep mine in prs, mostly because that is how I find them in the ocean. I do have an extra single male red striped pipe, I couldn't catch the female that was with him, and he is still alive (collected in 2006) so they don't have to be in prs to live.
