Do you aerate your QT

I have a 10 gallon QT setup with HOB filter. The filter has ceramic cylinders that were on the DT.

Just received a pair of clowns yesterday from DD and the male was swimming vertically with his mouth towards the top this morning. Almost seemed like he was trying to get air. By noon he was on the bottom and gone.

I Qt'd a trio of cardinals in this setup last month. They did fine. SG is 1.024 had zero ammonia; zero nitrite; didn't check nitrates.

I'm bummed.

My QT is 10 gallons with HOB filter, and I don't put air in it. There are some things that can make fish gasp; I'l list the ones I can think of off the top of my head:

Was the tank completely covered, with no chance of the tank air mixing with the room air?
Were there any airborne chemicals/fumes floating about near the tank?
Was the water temperature higher than it should be?
Could the clown have had some kind of gill infestation?
Could something have gotten into the water and prevented gas exchange (oil, lotion...)?
You might want to check your nitrates in case that was it (I'm not sure they'd cause that, but still).

Poor fishy. My condolences.
