Does anyone feel like this board has become

Its actually nice to see a club discussing this in the direction this thread has gone. Usually when threads get started talking about buying/selling/trading on here its berating staff because somebody whose membership is 2hrs old and has 3 "neat." posts feels they should be able to list their nano for $4,000 .

I dont think anyone is arguing the rules at all I do a ton of buying and selling and I think its a great place for it. But has anyone noticed these people "only" post wtb and think its a way around the 50/90 rule? Take a fast look at their post every single one is wtb or getting threads closed for selling

We run across this situation occasionally, there is a reason the "meaingful" post is included in our clause on the 50/90. :D What drives me crazy is the ones that bump up 14 selling threads from 2007 .

Unfortunately we can't really put custom rules for just a single club forum as it'd get terribly complicated for not only us to moderate but also for new members to try and understand. Heck, we already have folks that get confused that when the 50/90 says you can't sell anywhere, it really means anywhere including starting your own thread, replying to others, and through PMs :p (and trust me, we have folks that try to argue the contrary).

I should add that while we can't really "enforce" a rule such as not buying until you have 50 posts, I'm not sure what the rest of the staffs opinions would be on there being a sticky for general suggested etiquette.

I hear where folks are coming from - at the end of the day the folks that want to participate in discussion will, and the ones that don't will not. You can make more rules, not sure that will do much other than push potential contributors away. Then again i feel there are already to many rules for everything (in general, not pointed at RC)

I will say that having a series of LF or FS threads by the same person is a bit much, would be nicer to have combined into one.

I am sure making the fs posts rule carry over to the lf posts will not push new people away. They want discounted products and will play ball if it leads to a skimmer 50% off.

Sorry but I do not see what all the fuss is about. If you don't want to sell to a newbie then dont', If you do not want to buy the stuff they list then dont'. Maybe a thread for buying and selling is a good idea though, that way it does not clog up the forum as much. I was going to offer up a nice red bubble tip nem soon too for trade or sale. Mine just split but I guess that would not be proper.

I realize I'm going against the grain here, but to an extent I agree with this post.

would a sub-form for buy/sell/trade make folks happy?

If I come off harsh I appologise, I am a put it right out their kinda girl. Just thought it might help to have a newbie perspective on things. I do not want to offend anyone here, just want to be part of the group:)

I don't want to beat this dead horse thing. My issues is not with Noobs buying things. In the end it is not going to change. I have said my piece. I was the champion for my personal uprising. Let the slow drag towards chaos continue (sarcasm font).

I agree.

I've been posting here longer than most. there has always been a lot of buying and selling. the real issue is the forum gets far less daily traffic than it used to, which leads to less discussion on any given topic. I would imagine RC's traffic has dropped below where it was 5-10 years ago. forums are now a fairly dated method of e-communication as much as I still enjoy them.

RC is cursed by the very thing that makes it great...it's huge!

I got exhausted trying to keep up with the new posts on the whole forum...the turnover rate is ginormous.

Eventually I decided to simply bookmark sub-forums within RC that were more closely related to my reefing interests...NY, nano, DIY, etc.

The problem is that for those interests there are forums outside of RC that are more effectively targeted...so I end up visiting some of the upstate NY forums, and nano-reef.com, and follow those...

I'm not knocking RC, and I obviously read and post here, but it's a tough gig trying to be everything to everyone, and that may end up diluting the message after a while...

JMHO, YMMV

My 0.02 cents..

I believe that the main purpose of having a hobby oriented forum like RC is to share knowledge, experiences and help each other. Yes, I am a newbie and don't even have a saltwater tank yet and I read this forum everyday and gain knowledge. Yes, I am planning my tank and 'am gathering hardware needed to set one up. And yes, I was going to start a WTB thread as well (Maybe cant now).

The reason that I don't have a high post count is because I have nothing meaningful to add. I am still learning and reading the already existing vast knowledge in RC. All the questions I had were already asked and answered as well ( search functionality does miracles ). Maybe once my tank is up and running, I would have questions but for now I would not keep posting just to increase my post count.

Which then leads to the 50/90 rule. If a person has 50 MEANINGFUL posts, he would mostly have started a tank by then and would have had most of the hardware. Maybe the stuff selling here might be an upgrade to him, but that does not mean that its a necessity. I think newbies too should have a shot for ask/purchase stuff as well because it might be a necessity for him. This is an expensive hobby, and beginners like me would love to keep the costs down and if we are getting some used hardware for cheap, its great. I could search at eBay or CL to get stuff, but I'd prefer to get it from an experienced local reefer who has first hand knowledge and instructions and could help me setting it up. We tend to make more mistakes because of our inexperience, but at least the used hardware is where we could cut our losses.

Being a newbie is hard and this post is not intended to offend anyone, but just to point out what we appreciate being a part of this community. So please do not judge all newbies based on a few bitter experiences. After all, everyone was a newbie at some point in the hobby..

PS: I do believe that not thanking someone is indeed rude.

I feel like weighing in on this thread but I can't think of anything new to add, so maybe I'll just throw out a "+1" to get my post count up in case the 50/90 rule ever changes to 15000/3000 or something. :D

But really, I feel like this group does a good job of taking care of our own, and I hope this is a welcoming place to newcomers, no matter your experience level or specific interest. URS is a community, which covers a lot of aspects - sharing info, build threads, talking about meets, and buying and selling. I have a very strong preference to buy and sell locally when it comes to this hobby, especially for livestock, hence I tend to use this forum much more than the general classifieds forums and I can understand when others take that approach, too.

I've made some good friends through URS and I hope newcomers can get to that point, too. We're really lucky to have a strong and growing community in this region. For the newcomers who feel like you don't have anything to contribute - start a thread introducing yourself, describing your interest in the hobby, laying out your plans for your tank build, and I'm sure in no time you'll rack up the posts as we all talk about your tank, whether it's existed for 10 years or has yet to be built.

Okay, off to go post a WTB thread... :D

I was attempting to get the rule changed that you can't post all these LF threads unless you had 50/90. That is all. I failed and will celebrate just like how the Patriots did after losing the superbowl.

i had a guy that had 2 posts ask me to paint his harley and he would give me a couple frags when he got his tank up and running. HE DIDNT EVEN OWN A TANK BUT HE HOPED TO IN THE UPCOMING YEAR ! i said how about you pay for the paint job and when he finally gets a tank i would trade him a couple frags. guy was looking for a $4000 paint job for a couple frags and then told me i was a jerk and i dint know how to run a business. ahahahahaha.....yes i do ...keep business and my hobby seperate. i never met the guy nor have i ever seen him back on here ever again ! weird.......
if ive dealt with someone in the past and had gotten to know them and like them.......i would work with them but holy crap. but before he called me a jerk he asked me if i had any equipment laying around he could have for free. some people have no shame:wildone:

This is soooo true. My early threads were all about defeating algae, advice on designing my system, etc.

Same here. I was more worried about how to take care of group of small brown polyps that came on the live rock i purchased than looking for a todds torch.

People just get too antsy for this hobby. I think its time the rules are revisited.

I think its a more general statement from people who have been here for many years. Ive been told that the group was pretty close knit and thats what a majority of this forum conversation pertained to. People in this forum have worked very hard and spent a ton of money on this hobby and sometimes it comes off wrong if people want things for free or next to it.

Ive always taken the stance that if someone wants to offer something up then they will do that. I dont personally know many on here but I find it hard to believe that many on here wouldnt help a newbie if they could. IMO knowledge should be the first thing newbies should be asking about, goods can come later.

Ive seen enough threads opened by veterans that help newbies and peoole have done that for me. Jacwil hooked me up with a free head of hammer coral and since then we have gotten to be pretty good friends. jeff sold me some stuff at a great price and him and i have gotten to be pretty good friends too, we hook eachother up and its a great feeling to know i have very knowledgeable friends that are willing to lend a hand.

Since I made those friendships Ive given away GSPs for nothing, sold some very reasonable and let a nice piece of rock go with my Xenia because a newbie was starting out and because the girl and guy picking them up were extremely nice. Its called giving back.

Its things like that that we as a group should focus on. Too many people are gimme gimme with no give back in them at all.

Posting that your bubble tip just split isn't wrong. But when you sell it, think of you trying to help a newbie and hopefully in turn they will lend a favor to someone else. It just comes down to people wanting to become friends with reefers and not just fleece them for their goods and never talk again unless they want something.
