Does anyone feel like this board has become

Feel the need to dive in on this one. I am very new to the forum but not new to reefkeeping. I joined because someone else in the hobby said I should check this out. Not knowing any of you or your histories it is hard to figure out what to talk about on this forum. Comes off a bit cliquey at times. I have read a lot of good information on here too so maybe everyone just needs to chill out a bit its hard being the newbe...lol

Cant speak for all but if you look at my posts - I don't post much - i have been reading this forum for a couple of years joined over a year ago - but I don't have info to add - I am still learning and have learned alot from this forum.
I have never posted looking for "stuff" but we have responded to posts and bought "stuff" from them. In my eyes helping someone get rid of something they don't want or need any more PLUS getting something we need or want and saving some money. The best part is we usually end up learning or seeing something new from someone elses setup.
Remember it might be one of us "newbies" that buy that tank from you so you can upgrade to the larger one!!

i think as this hobby expands and more people tell more people about this forum we will see more of those people just lookin to cut a deal on something. i think its just the way it will become sooner than later. but hey, if they buy my tank someday or items ....sweet.

i do agree with cully that people should check other places first, what the heck is wrong with even check or searching the "selling" forums on reef central first!? just click search, then type in what you want and im SURE there will be plenty of hits for ya to check out. then if that fails, go to google, type in the search box what you want, and im sure you will find it for not a bad price new and probably minus tax! and then if all else fails post on here to see if someone has something "laying" around that we havent thought about selling yet. oh yea and edit....but if you dont want to spend money, you are in the wrong hobby.

just my own opinion! lol

I have not posted any wants yet but I did buy a frag from a very nice person. Many people might think that if they post here they are reaching the local reef keepers near them. I am not good navigating the reef central site yet, I favorited this forum cause its local. Do you guys ever have get togethers to get to know the people in the group on a large scale?

Cant the selling rule just apply to the lf posts?

Then this would not be an issue. The newbies would be forced to post. Like earning a carrot once the hit the post/timeline and the cranky ones will feel less like it is just a giant flea market.

I remember when I first started fragging a few years ago. I was headed in to ARC to pick something up and decided to try to trade something in while I was headed there. It turns out that Randy wasn't interested in a single, unmounted, green striped mushroom (even though I probably paid $20 for it at the fish place).

He was really cool about it, didn't make me feel like a total newbie, and showed me what kind of pieces were more appropriate to bring in. As goofy as we all can be when we're doing something for the first time, I think that it's important to make sure that we're constructive enough in our criticisms that we don't discourage new people.

Also, I was kind of hoping that the thread was going in the direction of big lebowski threads. You want a toe? I can get you a toe. Believe me, there are ways.

"This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."

I was in Nam and I did some bowling, but not in Nam.
I think you guys are wasting a lot of ink on this. If you don't want to buy or sell anything, don't look at those posts. I don't :D

Your points are well taken. I hear the word clique and I feel ashamed. I would NEVER want to steer someone away from our group, or discourage them from trying our hobby out.

However, life and society has, sometimes subtle rules of politeness and etiquette. If you enter a group of ANY PEOPLE under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES and immediately start asking for things without introducing yourself or exchanging pleasantries, you might get the cold shoulder. (I'm not saying you did this, but I've seen it several times, no offense to you directly)

Is this deserved, I don't know. Is it a likely reality, yep! That might give it the appearance of a clique.

I know many people on here, but iwas once new too. I've been treated well and try to reciprocate as best I can. Anyone who's ever been to my house has been treated cordially and left with big frags, big smiles, and a new friend.

I think i should specify that if I look at someone with 10 post but they have been a memeber a while I am not bothered by that i just hate seeing post 4 join the feb 2012 and you see four post looking for and the other 6 were post saying I am sorry you cant see the buying forum till you get 50/90 and a few they just closed for selling

I joined recently, and have enjoyed reading threads here and on some other reef forums...I'm looking forward to some get-togethers I'm hoping to make with some reasonably close people in the near future (I'm way up in the Adirondacks in Northern New York, and LFSs and reefers are few and far between up here).

I'm a member of an odd assortment of forums, based on my odd assortment of hobbies, and a common thread that runs throughout all of them is old-timers pining for the "good old days", back before all the newbs came and screwed everything up...I've posted some crotchety grandpa threads myself, and feel that they're often true enough, but later realized that while possibly true, they don't do much to make things better.

Be the forum that you want, don't complain about the one you're stuck with...this is fun...if it's not you're doing something wrong.

JMHO, YMMV.

Jamie, although you've only been on a short while, it's been a pleasure. Your post has allowed me to realize that I really don't wanna be THAT GUY, crotchety and ornery lol.

The last thing in the world I want would be for newcomers to come here and feel unwelcome.

Dam, you sound like me. Now I am going to make a call on my wooden, steam powered
IPhone. It is an "IPhone because "I" own it.
Nice to meet you fellow old timer. :wavehand:

I am confused. There is nothing wrong with wanting some type of decorum followed. It should be a sticky, like a URS charter.

It is hard to ignore when the first 5 threads are LF from people with under 100 posts.

LF Gem Tang!

Eastam,
You might have a better shot at getting a sticky by conducting a poll, then taking it to the mods/admin.Just a thought.

I'd say bring them this thread but they might just arrest Gary.
