Does anyone feel like this board has become

Well I have been following this thread so here is my 2 cents..
This thread is getting really old.....
I think the new people have a right to look for equipment at a cheaper price on here regardless of their post count. If a new member wants to save some cash and buy on here kudos to them. I don't think they should be able to sell anything until the 50/90 is met. I'm glad that they are finding their way here early in the hobby, they can learn from all of our errors. This only works if they listen though...Reef Central was a big secret back in the day and only if you knew someone who was a member you found out about it. I was in the hobby for about 5 yrs. before I found my way here and spent alot of money to watch things die...so for the guys who have been on here for a couple of years get over yourselves you were new once too....

Henry,
Hope you didnt get me wrong.Your definately more vocal, but just so were on the same page, Im in agreeance with you and have been the whole time.
My only beef was with rumage /garage sale- stuff bought a week ago relisted and resold for a profit. The suggested poll was just that ,a subtle way for him finding out without anybody getting offended.Ive seen debates settled that way before. No biggie, but this needed clarifying.
- this is what the rules say about buying ,selling or trading.Been seeing alot of threads removed lately so Im pretty sure that this means clubs, too.

You must have 50 posts in "real" forums (ie, not the Lounge, or the Selling and Trading forums) and have been registered for 90 days before you can create threads in the selling or trading areas. The same rule applies to selling an item in response to a thread in Want To Buy or trading an item in the Trading forums.

FWIW-Eastam does appear to be right in his complaint.

How bout a clause in that 50/90 thing where anyone who has been a member for over 2 years doesnt have to have 50 posts to sell something? I've been a member here for 5 years and because I don't post useless "nice tank"s or ask "how do I get rid of Red Slime" every time I see it my post count is very low. I think I have found an answer to every one of my questions so far simply by searching the forums . That search button is quite valuable...

Well adding a time limit to the 50/90 so that after however length of time a member could opt out of the 50/90 would defeat some of the purposes for the 50/90 rule being in place in the first place ;). Why should somebody who has been here for 2 or even 5, 6, or 7 years but only contributed 10 posts to the community over that time be allowed to sell. Yet somebody who has been here for a month and a half but has contributed 80 thoughtful quality posts isn't? Guy with 80 posts has done more to contribute towards the goal and mission of the forum. RC didn't grow to be the single largest source of information on the reef hobby by members simply being members here. It got that way by people jumping in and sharing their thoughts and information. Search is an amazing tool but not everything can be found via the search.

As for the rest of this thread, don't think your ideas aren't going unlooked at. Truthfully nearly all the ideas presented in this thread are ones that staff have discussed at length as well, and continue to be reevaluated and looked at to see if any changes need to be made. :)

Interesting thread.

As an idea. What if. This may keep me and many others more interested in coming here more often. We run reef central like a country. Members get to vote for government (president) who run adds and push different ideas for different topics. We could have multiple parties who will enforce their own rules when in power. Mods could be elected and disputes of banning people would be handled in court judged by multiple judge mods or members as jury. Vendors could buy or I mean sponsor these politician. Let's make it a democracy. We could even start a welfare fund paid in by all contributing members to supply those freeloaders who are here just to get a free frag.

Am I crazy and thinking way into this whole forum thing? Thought so.

Actually, moderator decisions aren't unilateral. It is very much a group effort.

While your democracy idea is fun, like it or not, RC is a business. It has to be. While we all gripe about the speed sometimes, the amount of infrastructure behind a forum of this size would boggle your mind. That just isn't something that's ever likely to happen.

Cheers

Wow realy glad there wasen't a thread like this when I joined or I probably wouldn't be here. I think my first post was how do i join, second post was can I attend your swap, and third I have lots of softies for sale. That first swap was great I met lots of great people sold a bunch of coral and had a great time.

I think some of the folks you see here looking for things are people that someone sent here, from the club or one of the shops. They were probably never told to take a little time to introduce themselves and talk about what they are planning before jumping in and asking for what they are looking for.

I agree with if you don't like it don't respond!!!!!

But lets not try to scare the new people away. I mean then who would we sell our old junk to.

At least this thread got everyone talking the club was getting a little boring.
x2

Too bad this thread is the most lively one in our forum right now!

FWIW I found RC because I was selling frags. I was growing out Acros and other stonies beack when most LFS's in Rochester didn't offer them for sale. Some fella named Playfair bought my frags and then invited me over to see his reef aquarium. Then he told me that some local reefkeepers on RC were talking about my aquarium. I borrowed a laptop, found RC online and the rest is history.

IMO 'looking for' and 'for sale' threads (regardless of who posts them!) can become a nuisance but they're easily avoided. If you can't help the person out don't look at the thread and don't bump it up. No brainer. Let's talk about something else.

Half the reason I'm here is to look for corals, fish, equipment FS. The other half is time well spent learning from others. There are the 'Drygoods buy/sell/trade' groups, but they aren't local, so what's the point. I'd like to see the merchandise (not that I have ever bought anything here!) and not have it shipped from Kentucky.

That being said, maybe URS could have an OT/FS sub heading...
