Does chloroquine phosphate kill filtration bacteria?

I've been searching on here, and I can't seem to find a definitive answer. Just speculation from years ago when this treatment was being revived.

The reason I ask, is I am planning on starting to restock my tank after a 4 month fallow period, post Ich. I lost all my fish in the end:sad1:

I want to know whether I should be seeding a sponge to put in the QT, or whether that's just a waste of time, as the CP will kill it anyway.

If it does kill the bacteria, how do people manage amonia levels during the QT period?

I don't think it does.

But there are strong indications that some filter bacteria may break down CP and render it ineffective. For that reason I would always prefer to use it in a barren tank, ideally during TTM.

I don't use CP much since I have a lot of pipefish and other fish that may react negatively to it.

It will not affect the biofilter. I agree with ThRoewers assertion about certain bacteria breaking it down though. Definitely use in a sterile tank.

Hmm, interesting. Does anyone know what type of bacteria breaks down CP? Are there any studies on this?

There are reports of failed CP treatments by people who used "Bacteria in a Bottle" Bio-filter starter products.
But to my knowledge there haven't been any scientific studies on this.

Make sure the CP is new and fresh and you won't have to worry about bacteria breaking it down. If the med has been opened for a few months or is old product then it won't be as effective
