bought a royal gramma yestarday and as soon as i put it in the tank the damsel wont leave it alone he keeps nippin at its tail the poor thing is lookin kinda rough, but he has found a good hidin spot where the damsel cant get to it, but idk if he is guna make it because he most likely wont come out to eat. should i take the damsel out or just try and isolate the damsel until the gramma gets settled in?

damsel will always be an ***. how large is your tank? they become very mean. if you want other fish, i would get rid of the damsel.

tanks a 55 been up for a little over 3 months...the damsel was the first fish i got then a clown and thats all i had till yestarday when i put the royal gramma in..tryin to take it real slow and let my tank stabalize n all that jazz...looks like im guna have to get rid of the damsel:hmm2:

A domino needs 100 gallons. Sorry to say. You might try putting an eggcrate barrier up temporarily. The situation you've got: 1 fish with a 50 gallon territory, and a new fish who doesn't know yet where to be.
Turn out the lights on a fight. Every day's a new world if you're a duck---or a fish. The domino may get up in the morning thinking the gramma's always been there.
Failing that, I'd get the damsel back to the store, because that fish needs more room.

did not know they needed so much room i guess ya learn something new everyday lol ill probly look into gettin the damsel out this weekend if i have time and providing it keeps pickin on the new guy. that would make sense tho because the clown stays in its one area and doesnt move all over the tank it stays to one side i guess that is where the damsel wants it.

Yep, they don't tell you these things. If I can offer some help catching it: a semi-tilted liter wine carafe with some shrimp at the bottom might lure it in: net over the neck, fast. Or see if you can move in a slab of eggcrate to wall off an angle of the tank so you can net it. Fishfood in a net, near the glass.

If all else fails, de-water the tank with a powerful pump, with a hole dug in the corner: fish go there, net the rascal, and then rewater the tank fast. You can do this in an sps reef without hurting anything: you need a friend to provide extra hands and you need a big Brute Rubbermaid trashcan, but it works. I've caught a dottyback by that method, and that's the worst fish I ever tried to net, including an eel.

I have a pretty nice size domino :

He attacks anything I put in the tank. He is the easiest to catch due to him attacking the net, my hand, test vial, whatever...

 they are a handsome damsel, but not the friendliest.
It is often possible to catch a dominant fish, because they will go straight for the food in a trap, in a net, you name it.

Flush the domino, they lure you with their cuteness then turn into a finned version of chucky as soon as they settle into your tank.

I agree they're cute when young, but they get rather unattractive when they get big IMO

I use something similar to the wine carafe technique mentioned above. I use a clear acrylic box with a handle on it and put some mysis in there. Lower it into the tank a little and let the mysis start swirling around. Generally a few fish will start to come in and eat. When the one you want comes in, tilt it back and bring it up and out of the water.

I just caught a tri-color wrasse this way who was terrorizing my labouti. Took a couple days of it, but he finally swam in to eat and I got him.

I have two of them. I like the way they look. Yeah they are a little tempermental. I was having an issue with the larger one trying to attack everything that went into the tank. I bought two Clowns and it harrassed the one until it finaly had enough and jumped out of the tank and on the floor. A few months later i got a pair of maited clowns. The female keeps the Domino in check and havent had much problems from it at all since then.

i got him after about a half hour of persistance lol two nets and my brothers help and practically dismantaling my aquascape but i got him out and guna run him to the fish store tomorrow if i have time neways:dance:...now about my royal gamma he is still in hiding do u guys think he will eventually come back out or should i try to shooo him out or just let him be...i dont want hime to starve down there

Don't try to shooo him. That will just add more stress. Turn out the lights and let things settle overnight.

well i looked this mornin n he was pokin out a little bit so maybe he will come out when it is feedin time a little later hopefully i just want him to survive, but itll probly b a long road for him his tail is all jacked up from the domino nippin at him, but time heals all right ( does that work with fish )

He'll be fine. Fish may go 2 weeks without food in the shipping/collection end of things. Hopefully he'll be out increasingly as he discovers the coast is clear. He's just waiting for sharks since the damsel has vanished.

Funny to hear your gramma being bullied. My royal gramma is the king of my 100g. Yes, my fish are few and small, but he thinks he is all that and then some. I've had him for a couple years and he's the largest one I've ever seen. If I put my hand near his favorite cave, he darts out and hits it. Hasn't drawn blood yet. More of an annoying startle while I'm trying to move frags around. Sometimes I reflexively jerk when he hits, and that often leads to many what I call "china shop" frags - pieces that get inadvertently broken off as my hand does its thing (like a bull in a china shop...).
