Dosing vitamin C?

How can you effectively dose something you can't test for?

B-I-N-G-O and Degenerate was his name-OH!

But, to play devil's advocate, Degenerate, do you feed your fish? How to you "test for" mysis concentration, or plankton concentration?

But if people are really "dosing" the stuff, well, good luck. People trippin on all sort of tree-huggin hippie stuff -- Beta Glucan, Vitamin C, who know's what's next.

I found that not only was it wasy to dose but that it works. I have seen improvement in my tank as well as around 98% of the people that are dosing it and helping out with the 35 page thread concerning it.
The fact that it only lasts up to 8 hours in the tank assures me that I cant overdose it.

Being open minded has it's advantages sometimes.

I was talking to one of the marine biologists at the Shedd the other day and she told me that *most* of the advancements in technique and technology come from hobbyists experimenting at home and not from scientific study.

I wrote an email to Allen LaPointe about this & he said he was going to send it to the other chemists at the Shedd. I never heard back.

C'mon, it's easy to know when you've "dosed" the correct amount of food, and I completely understand not only the benefit of feeding, but also WHY feeding is beneficial. ;)

I didn't say that dosing your tank with Vitamin C would cause a crash, I just asked how to effectively dose something you can't test for. The point has been made that vitamin C will only last in your tank for "XX" (less than a day)hours. I understand that to be true in your body, but I don't know, either way if that applies to your tank.
I'm open minded, the fact that I bothered to ask should tell you that. Thing is, I have a lot in my tank that means a lot to me. I would need a lot of convincing.
I'm not telling you it's bad, I just don't know that it isn't.

Well lucky for you we are being guinea pigs! haha

As far as how long VC lasts in tanks I believe the answer came about based on simple chemistry. The C breaks down at a specific rate at a specific temperature. Also its water soluble.

I completely understand your hesitation of just dumping something into your tank. So sit back, watch us goofballs do it and tag along on the threads we have made. Puffer has been dosing for 4 months now and has seen no ill affects so far.

Also Jdieck has been following the thread, and from what I hear, he is the guy to talk to about dosing stuff into your tank.

Read the thread that I posted. I am not going to convince you. If the thread doesnt convince you then so be it. It works and is safe. Anybody that has tried it can tell you that but reading 35 pages concerning vitamin C usage can be a bore.
BTW, you dont always have to be "you" ;)

I'm also somewhat skeptical of the claims that vitamin C just goes away after being added to the tank. In the body, I'm pretty sure it's cleared out by the kidneys--not by some kind of automatic degradation process. That said, it also takes quite a bit of it to do any harm to humans, so there could be a pretty wide range of acceptable levels for our tank inhabitants, too. But it does become toxic at some level, so a gradual build-up caused by regular dosing could eventually start to cause problems even if it's giving really good results for a long time.

I will be trying VC but I will be cycling it.

same thing with the body is that its never good to continuously use, after "breaks" is when you see the strongest response.

I will be doing a measured dose.

then a slow drop down to 0.

break.

repeat.

with water changes should alleviate the amount of VC concentration in the tank.

Why would you want to "alleviate the amount of VC concentration in the tank"?
I am sure sure you read the 36 page thread on how to use it, right? ;)
