Don't mind all the algae growing everywhere, I'm working on it. lol

yeah I would not do that with multichips

To each their own I guess. The heat sinks feel slightly warm to the touch when the lights are on. I used to have a 50w 10k white multichip in the spot where the dreamchip currently sits. That setup had been running for 2-3 months without any issues. I actually had that setup running passive initially (1-2 days), but the heatsinks got hot. Not hot to the point where you couldn't hold your hand against for an extended period of time, but hot enough for me to slap a 120mm fan on it. At least this proves that in a pinch, if my fans died on me, they can be ran passively until I replace the fans.

* I was more concerned about the ldd drivers. Man those got really hot in my plastic container. I couldn't put my finger on them comfortable for more than 5 seconds. I had to cut holes in the container and have a 80mm fan blow air through them.

Speaking as a control panel builder, I would recommend using different colors of wires for each channel and a black wire for the ground. It makes troubleshooting and preventing wiring errors much easier.

While a agree using different colored wire is a good idea- green in my industry is used extensively to signify a ground wire. While black is well accepted as a hot lead.

Either way, a smart approach is to have a schematic and possibly a wiring diagram/print to refer to while wiring and to keep for later to troubleshoot if something goes wrong. It would not be a bad idea to have a whole circuit the same color either. It is cheaper to buy one colored wire though. An alternative is to buy multi conductor control cable. Say 100' of 9 conductor and what ever size you want it to be. Then seperate the wires from the cable buy cutting the outer insulation off. A 9 conductor cable will have 9 different colored wires in it.

MY Crude Light

MY Crude Light

my crude light in comparrison to what others have done, but work is still in progress, i intend to cover front and sides with black plastic, or wood grain vanier. The Dim4 controller is mounted on the side, forgot to take a pic of it. this light has two 100led dream chips maxing out at 850miliamps per channel. 3 royal blue crees for moon lights. I will post more when i get around to it.

@bobfish4black: looks good

@MHG: Correct term for the chip you ask for is 20 W violet blue hybrid

Nice looking build. Similar to a kessil.. What's the data port on your fixture? Is it functional for dimming with a controller?

Interested in what heat sinks you used.. Looks great.

Heat sinks is Zalman CNPS8900 EXTREME

What you see is a special designed driver card for the Dream Chip with 5 individual channels. The data ports has not with Ethernet to do - the interface is only in use for communication between different driver cards and - as you suspect - with a controller card.

Two DreamChip 100 with only B/RB/UV channels enabled. Tank still mostly empty, got some SPS only last week, will post growth shots.
Currently running DC only 1 hour/day to acclimate coral.

For the original dream Chip (100 LEDs) - you need to use Zalman CNP8900 Extreme or Zalman CNP8900 Quite. These chip can be run up to around 200 W. For the 5.1 Lumia chip - Zalman CNPS 2X works well (50 LEDs max 100 W).

Zalman CNP8900 series seems to be difficult to find just now but in Europe you can find it here
