drummereef's 180g in-wall build

Brett- I'm going to guess it's from your cleaner wrasse, when they sleep in the rocks they secret a slime layer as a protective coating. In the morning they shed the coating and they can be seen floating around the tank.

Dang, why didn't I think of that! I bet you are right Pete. Thank you. :)

UPDATE:

Today's coral feeding brought to you by Roti-Feast. Got over to the LFS today to pick some up. So now I'm regularly feeding Roti-Feast, Oyster-Feast, ZEO AAHC, and occasionally frozen Cyclop-eeze. I'll keep you posted how PE looks and if I see a difference in color and growth as well. ;)

Well over the course of 3 work days, I read through your entire build. What a journey, kinda of sad its over.

Great attention to detail, in fact you motivated me to clean up some of my wiring this weekend. Your tank is incredible. Ill definitely keep an eye on it.

Have you noticed a decrease in the amount of your biopellets yet? I ask because we're running the same pellets and have been for awhile now, but my pellets have dropped a few inches in the reactor. They also appear much "stickier" in that the tumbling has decreased significantly and I can't put more flow through it until I upgrade my return pump.

Ha! Yeah I thought I'd try something different. :D I can't get the avatar upload quality to look the same as the original file. Looks less sharp but my file size is 99.4kb but is 150x150 pixels. I guess it's compressing it on the way in. I'm destined to fix this! :hammer:

:wavehand:
I see another new avatar!:spin3:
Still trying to solve it huh!:lol2:

Btw....I got some of the RN arctic pods (orange solution) from a LFS to try to encourage some feeding of a few fish. Everyone seems to lie it, just that it seems to kill my skimmer output for a good day if not 2. The head foam really drops a lot.

You notice any of this when feeding any of the brew or other things like roti feast?

Wowwwwwww

This is an amazing thread. Your attention to detail and your patience is awesome! I love seeing builds like these because it helps keep my motivation up. Congrats on an awesome setup

Ha! Thanks gablett. Don't you worry, this thread is never over!

Hey Alex, my pellets are actually about the same as when I first added them. I think because my bio load is so low to begin with it's not taking much to keep nutrients in check. I'm assuming because of the amount of fish you keep and you also have larger coral colonies etc, that is why you are seeing a reduction in the pellet volume...?

 Yeah, it's really hard to take a RAW file and reduce it to 8kb I'm finding. That's why they look out of focus when I upload them. Dangit!!! :D

Cool! I've seen the Arctic Pods at my LFS as well. Roti and Oyster Feast don't kill the skimmer head too bad. However, frozen Cyclop-eeze and Rods Food will really mess with the skimmer for about a day. I think it's all the oils in the food that kill the foam head. Roti and Oyster Feast seem relatively clean as far as small particle foods go imo.

Hey Brett .. Do u use Phol xtra?

Hey afernandez, I don't use Phol's Xtra at this point. I thought about getting some in the near future to try out though. ;)

Thanks for the kind words redsoxfan. There's always more to come! :)

Space Alien! "Take me to your leader or I'm gonna take over this pool"

 Haha Gary.

About avatars, if you have photoshop or something like it, have you tried using "Save for Internet" under the saving options?

Thanks Alex. I've been using Lightroom to edit all my photos. It only has an "export" option where you export to various file types. I don't see an "internet" option but I'll look again. Unfortunately I don't have PS. :worried:

I usually use Shrink Pictures to create avatars and have not noticed any decrease in quality.

Jay

Thanks Jay! I tried that site a couple days ago but for some reason it won't render 1x1 aspect images, they come out black. But I imported an original aspect crop tonight after you posted the link and it worked great! Took my 222 KB file down to 5.39 KB. Now I just have to take better pictures.

Question for you guys... I just noticed tonight some tissue receding on this blue acro. The pic shows the bad side, the other side looks better. I wonder if it was because it was ~8" from the front of my MP40, most of the bad tissue was facing the Vortech. It was definitely in the line of fire from the Vortech which ran at full throttle quite a bit. Do you think that amount of flow could cause the tissue to recede like this?

I don't see any AEFW or eggs anywhere but I'm no expert on that subject, nor do I see any "round" bites... I've since moved the coral down to the sand to rule out too much light and/or flow. :worried:

Flow can absolutely be a problem, but 8" from a vortech is pretty far considering they have such a broad and "gentle" flow pattern, even on full blast. Some times tissue recession just happens, especially if its a wild or maricultured coral. Since that looks like an aquacultured frag it should recover.

Brett...

Have you had an alkalinity spike at all recently. I lost two really nice torts because I accidentally put too much kalk power in my reactor when I did my monthly service on it and spiked the alk to 12. Really bummed, but it appeared to only hit the two torts.

HTH

Thats a sweet looking frag.....hopefully it was just to much flow.

Me too. It's a really nice frag Nook gave me. He even said, "I didn't mean to break off that big of a piece". :D

Good to know. It's got a tiny bit brown algae growing on the receded parts so I don't know if that means those are goners or not. It might just need a more gentle area of the tank. I actually reprogrammed my Vortechs to run in Reef Crest mode during lights on so we'll see if that helps the other corals as well. I was running on constant 100% during lights on but I wonder if it was just too much flow...

I've been watching Alk pretty close over the last few weeks. It's hanging between 7.5-7.9 consistently. After water changes I only have to add 2-part for a couple days to push through to the next water change. The Alk falls about 0.1 daily right now. I definitely know there hasn't been a spike above 8.0.

Hay Brett

Could be from dipping and new tank stress. the brown parts are a goner but most likely will recover.

I would use turkey baster on it, to keep any unseen pest off the coral's dead tissue.

Big fan of your tank and thread. Thank you for sharing with us.

Best
