drummereef's 180g in-wall build

Looks great Brett! Filling that thing up with saltwater is going to take a lot longer. You should have some nice pain in your cheeks from all the grinning you'll be doing watching it fill up.

Again this is only a fresh water test to check for leaks and such. RO/DI will be next. ;)

How come the next fill up will be RO/DI?

Are you going to mix up the saltwater solution in the tank??

Jest wonderin'

Looks awesome!! I have some black sealant from when I replaced my seal and I can help you with the project if you need it...been there and done that a couple times now.

Great Dave, thanks for the offer! Tell me more about this sealant. The girl from Reeflo wasn't very specific what to use. She said it needed to be rubbery, whatever that means. Did you use black silicone? I have some of that.

looking good.... took a long time but it's done... your plumbing looks really nice and clean... well done.... congratulation....

Weird, since my last post here I haven't been getting email notifications, yet your still in my subscribed list under My RC. When I did my freshwater test I was in a garage so i just started a siphon and let it run down the driveway. You're going to have a lot of fun getting all that water out of there :D.

Yeah I know the feeling. I have kinda hit a wall as of late. Got a lot to do, just no time to do it. Fish seem happy, my few polyps are thriving. Just trying to work things out when I have time. Of course I cant compare to your endeavor, but I get the jist of it.

Man, your tank is nothing to scoff at. You've done a fantastic job with yours and put in a lot of work to boot. It's a process for sure. Glad to hear your fish and coral are doing well. I'm subscribed to yours so I'll swing by when you have time to update your thread. :)

 Thanks Bill. Yeah, it will take a while for sure. Only took about 20 minutes or so to fill it with tap water. It almost went to quick to where I couldn't enjoy it, I was so worried about stuff going wrong. :) I'll kick back on the next round. :)

I was just saying this is a fresh water test with tap water at this point. I may mix the saltwater in stages outside the tank, haven't decided yet. Or I might sit there with a measuring cup one by one dumping it into the tank, enjoying every scoop of course.

Thanks H. And thanks for sticking around while I got this thing going. There's lots of updates to come. I'll keep you posted.

 Yeah, I thought about that... a little. Luckily there's the main drain from the HVAC system on the other side of the pump wall. I'm planning on getting a water change system down where I just siphon/pump to that drain. We'll see how that works out.... :D

Drummer-
I have been computerless this weekend and you decided THEN to drop the bombshells! Well a late CONGRATS is in order, looks phenominal. I am in sump designing/deciding mode. I am looking at a sump/fuge of melevs site(which is up and running now BTW), but am a bit confused about some of its demensions. It hurts to stare at a clear box to figure it out sometimes. My eyes just trick me I guess. I also like the clean simplicity of yours though too!
Is there anyhting you'd change about your sump design that you already notice? I am using an AGA 180 with dual(non corner) overflows, but I don't see that requiring a different sump design from something like yours. I think after your recommendation, as well as reading, I am being swayed to the MSX250 as opposed to the Octo. Do you know if there are differences in the venturi's?

I have also planned to used a couple mp40s! I love my mp20 in my nano. Are you getting plenty of movement with the 2 of them in a 6' tank? I was wondering if they would be enough. I look forward to your vid on this!

Sorry to hijack. Your 180 is definetly an inspiration to my forthcoming building, so thank you for that!

Thanks for the kind words jmadison! :) As far as my sump goes, I haven't had much time with it yet but from what I've seen it's performing as planned. My design was fairly simple in that I wanted it to be a "mechanical" sump only. Meaning, I didn't want there to be anything living in my sump. It will only house my skimmer and reactors. I plan on plumbing in a remote refugium into the system in the near future. I just like the idea that even though the system is interconnected it is somewhat compartmentalized. Then again maybe that's my OCD. The 2" bubble walls are working great. But as Melev said, saltwater carries bubbles farther so time will tell there...

As for the MSX250 goes, from what I've seen and have been following it will skim better and more efficiently than the Octopus counterpart. Mostly because of the mods Marine Solutions does to the volute and pinwheel. The proprietary pinwheel design just chops air better. I can't say more positive things about their customer service too. Great bunch of guys. ;)

I've been messing around with the vortechs too. One word.... WOW! You'll have no problem with 2 of the MP40's on your tank. The flow from one covers the 6 foot length of my tank. I'll post a pic of the standing wave too for you to see. Probably won't use it, but it's still pretty sick. :)

I am 99% now for the MS skimmer, I like that its users rave about the customer service. One of those things that I hope I really don't need to utilize all that much, but being a reef tank it'll def. be great to turn to when I need to. And it's cheaper to boot!

I can't wait for these! Do you plan on hiding any powerheads down in the rockwork(that I am also excited to see!) or anything like that? Or is this going to be done with solely the vortechs?

Don't really have plans yet about hiding the powerheads in the rocks yet. I might add my tunze nanostreams to the tank but from what the flow looks like it's probably unnecessary.

UPDATE:

I took a video of the standing wave my Vortechs make in my 180. It took me a little while to find the frequency the wave would respond to, but once I got it dialed in it took off! The Wave Driver allows you to save the setting for instant recall. It's crazy how fast the wave will start once the setting is selected. I couldn't run fast enough to the viewing side and turn my camera on before the wave started (maybe 7 seconds). It was literally almost instant. Again, it's a 6 foot tank with two MP40's.

Don't mind the ugly blue foam background. It's all I could find to block out the sun's glare from the sump room. Enjoy! :D

Ok I have been tagging along quietly watching your build and I have to say that your attention to detail is unbelievable. I look forward to seeing you finish this. Can't wait to see your aquascaping! The wave by from the Vortech is awesome are they both on one side or are they facing each other?

Marc- Looks to me that they were working in sync in that mode. But I could be wrong. BTW did you ever find my email?

Were your returns running during that wave? Did you have any issues with the fluctuating water level affecting your overflow boxes?
