drummereef's 180g in-wall build

Start with a current FTS to document ;)

I second that!! FTS to help monitor progress! Or lack there of...

Fashionably late but always worth the wait, good to see you back Brett.

I think he merely came out of the darkness to say merry Christmas

You guys are cracking me up. Haha! :D Not sure there's much to see honestly. My display looks like a frag tank with aiptasia instead of sand.

Your build has been inspirational to so many people! A lot of folks love the build and diy aspect, but when that's all over it becomes husbandry and that isn't as patient as two year builds:) As tough as it's been, I wish you would keep this thread active good or bad so folks can see that even experts like you and I have our struggles maintaining reefs. Hang in there Brett and put up some aiptasia pictures already!!:D

Your move Rum Puh Pum Pum!!

You are absolutely right Nook. It's far to easy to post pics of your pride and joy when things are going well, but when it comes to the bad and ugly it's just as easy to recluse to avoid the possible ridicule. Human nature I suppose.

You told me many moons ago the success of a reef tank revolves around the live rock. I believe you even more today since I experienced it first hand. My reefing experience came from the days of the REAL Fiji rock of the 90's - you remember I'm sure. The days when you could go the LFS, pick up some rock, and have seemingly immediate success. Today, it's almost luck of the draw... Some people prep the living crud out of their rock and still have problems. Other's don't do anything but still have success keeping whatever they want. No rhyme or reason to it that I can see, it's just the way it is nowadays.

Ok, Ok, I will post some pics of the current state of the tank - tonight when the lights come on. :) Prepare yourself for the shocking truth...

This way you'll have a fun set of pictures to look at when everything looks awesome!

Have you considered Nudi's out of curiosity? I always have trouble with the idea because of their eventual demise, and it's unlikely that they'll get them all prior to kicking the bucket.

I have considered the nudibranchs but it was going to be a TON of money to get them started so I passed on the idea. And at the moment I don't have idea conditions for them since I have no rock in the display. It would be open season on the little guys. lol

UPDATE:

OK guys, here's the good, bad and the really ugly. Forgive my pictures, it's been a while holding a camera in front of the tank. Here goes... be gentle. :D

Let's start with the good!

My new little fishy friend, a Matted Filefish. Hope he's hungry!! :worried:

Shrimp still hangin' around.

OK here goes... Let's just group the bad and ugly together. Believe me, it's much worse than what the pictures capture. :(

Not much has changed back here. Just trying to keep up with regular maintenance.

I recently changed 2 of the 3 metal halide bulbs. Switched from 250 watt Radiums to 250 watt XM 20K bulbs. LOVE the color and clarity the XM bulbs give - even if the PAR is well, sub-par. :p The Left and Right bulbs are the XM, Center is the old Radium. Now that I've seen the color the XM give I'm going to get the 3rd bulb to replace the center MH.

Awesome Brett. Glad to see you back (again!). I hope you had a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Looks like you may need a multi prong approach.

1). Get the berghia nudibranch. Good choice on the file fish. Hope he eats for you.

2). There's a couple YouTube videos on training peppermints to eat Aiptsia.

3). Lasers!

4). Try and suck out the ones on the sand bed. That way you should suck all their spores along with them.

5). Boiling hot water in a syringe. This should hopefully kill their spores too?

6). Thick skin. Hang in there buddy.. We're all cheer'n for ya!

Peppermints work for me. I even have 1 left I put frag plugs in front of him from my frag tank every now and then just to keep them in check if I see one. He eats it up in minuets

We all go through this type of stuff. Hang in there. U will get it back on track.

Brett, I just wanted to say that it's good to see you back on the forum and still in the game, buddy!

My build thread is still active and if you have the time, check it out.

I've been completely redoing my fish room (and replaced my tank!) and I went back and re-read your entire thread and used it for inspiration and tips.
Extremely helpful! This thread has always been an inspiration and I hope you continue to post, good or bad.
It was sad to see the thread go dormant for so long.

Best of luck in your rebuild and I hope 2015 brings much success! :bounce3:

Really glad to see the update Brett, as others have noted, everyone goes through periods of issues. It's just like the build portion- time, patience and effort. Hope that little guy has a big appetite, looks like he will be well fed!
