drummereef's 180g in-wall build

UPDATE:

Part of my lighting order came today! The reflectors are drop shipping from Coralvue so they will hopefully be in tomorrow or the first of next week. I'll update you with some pics when they get here.

Here's a pic. :)

Hey Brett - amazing thread and work you've done! I dont have as much time to spend here on RC so I just pop in and out when needed. I just spent 2 hours during work time to read through this! I am speechless at your craftmanship and attention to detail - reminds me of Weatherson's build and thread. I have a similar setup (220 inwall in my basement with a seperate tank room) and I have to say I'm embarrassed when I think of what my stand and sump look like :-)

Anyway, love it. Can't wait to see what you do for your lighting rack as I need to build something similar. Thanks for such an inspirational thread!

PS - love that you laminated your pump stand. Awesome!

Thanks Bryan, I really appreciate the kind words. And I appreciate everyone following even though it's taking a while to get up and running. :)

Finally got my tracking #s for the reflectors, they should be here Tuesday! Then I can start measuring for the light rack. I'm going to use www.estoconnectors.com/ to build the frame. Also using Glass Reefs moveable suspension system out of Stanley door track. Hopefully I can get it measured to put a parts list together and ordered by the end of next week.

Those esto connectors look great! wish i knew about them when i made my aluminum light rack. cant wait to see more details on your plans - Glass Reefs / Stanley door track.

How funny, I've got almost the EXACT same light setup being put together. I got the lumatek ballasts (same as galaxy as far as I can tell), radiums, and the mini-wide reflectors (planning on a wider tank). Right now I have just one of them running on my current setup, but I like it a lot (just fired up on Thursday). I'm definitely intrigued by the estoconnectors stuff.

Question... For the Aluminum framing your using, do the plastic corners just slide in tight and there are no screws or rivets?
Thanks for the link!!

Looks like they just slide in, but it would not take much to put a screw in it to hold it really tight. I really like the looks of this stuff. Might just be what I want to go with too. Thanks.

Joe

Nice man. You got any pics of the new setup?

Correct, no rivets or screws. I believe you have to use a rubber mallet to put the connectors on the pipe so it's a really snug fit. From what Glass Reef said, I got the impression they are very secure. There's other sites out there that sell similar stuff but I called Esto and they are really nice/helpful people. That's why they will get my business. :)

No problem Joe. The only risk of putting a screw in them is galvanic corrosion from two dissimilar metals touching in a salty environment (unless you can find an exact match aluminum screw). All the eyebolts and such I will use will be insulated with various nylon washers and sleeves to keep all the metal from touching together. ;)

If the plan comes together as I'd like, I have a really cool hanging system I will be using too. Can't wait to get started on this project! :)

UPDATE:

The reflectors came today! In one of the boxes they left out the mounting screws for the mogul socket so they are sending some replacements asap. Other than that I'm really happy so far. Here's some pics! :)

A little surprise in one of the boxes... Something tells me I won't be able to read these instructions for a variety of reasons.

Lights look great. But I don't want to know about that lotion. ;) I got a shipment from bluezoo the other day that was packed with what appeared to be a chinese newspaper. If it had been in russian, I could have figured it out, but as it was I had no hope!

Looks awesome man. Even your frag tank looks cool. :)

Thanks. It's got a 48" x 30" footprint, which has made me really appreciate the front-back depth. I really don't want to go back to a 24" wide tank, so we'll have to see how that desire plays out into a display.
