DSB SPS tanks

Does anyone here use a DSB in their SPS tanks?

I do..but I'm still low on SPS mostly LPS atm will be adding more sps in about a month or 2. Tanks only 3 months old atm. I've proboly got maybe a dozen acros/frags floating around, and a dozen montis/frags.

i have a DSB in my sps tank and love it. it takes some time to get your flow pattern down without making a sand storm. but once you figure that out your home free.

Mine's a 4" DSB w/ mainly SPS corals (some LPS and clams). I also have a DSB in my fuge and lots of rock.

Mine is fairly deep in spots. I've tried shallow and bb, so far I like the dsb the best.

i do. i like it, although my next tank will not have 1...looks good and natural and going good, but just another thing to worry about...(sandstorms, nutrient absorbtion-tank crash, syphoning, some don't but i do...).

The additional filtration benefits mostly. And the ability to keep a jawfish. That said, there are some potential drawbacks that come with a DSB.


But I definitely would not one in my present tank - it is only 24" deep. I would want a 30" tall tank, minimum. With trim around the base to hide most of the sand depth from the front view.

Sometimes I think about an offline DSB, but I never do anything about it. Right now, my SSB is at most, 1-1/2"

i use one because BB just got ugly to me after a while, and I had bad nitrate build up. also most of the successful tanks I see and like are dsb so they must be doing something right....my only issue is flow blowing sand, cause I want the same amount of flow i had when bb

Look into a remote DSB if you have the room, lets me have the flow I like in my display and have the benefits of the DSB(also easily replacable when fully absorbed.)

I did DSB(plenum with 6' skimmer) years ago.

Never could stop the algae though, even with a 6' skimmer and a boatload of GFO.

I hear you on the jawfish. My buddy had a 8'x2'x2' 240 with a 6" sandbed and a canopy (which had a lip over the top of the tank). It was like looking through a '34 Ford chop top.

Some really neat creatures are associated with sand. I keep an acrylic sandbox in my display for my leopard wrasses. For the extra filtration, have you looked at the sulphur based reactors? I'm researching them now.

thought mine was deep. but after seeing some of yours mine would be shallow!
