probably not too bad if water in overflow has already drained. valve should be above the union.

Funny this thread should be revived. As the OP, I feel it necessary to reveal my latest dumb plumber incident.

Refilling my tank with RO/DI water yesterday after completion of new build. Water coming out of RO/DI at 0 TDS. 8 hours later, tank 1/3 filled, but awful smell. Look at RO/DI meter and now at 600. Double check with handheld TDS meter and same horrible result. :eek1:

Tear apart RO/DI unit to discover that one DI cartridge had ruptured. Called Spectrapure in panic that I just ruined 110 lbs of dry rock. Assured that DI resin is completely inert. Whew!!!

Drain tank, rinse rock, put in new DI cartridge. TDS at 0. 5 hours later, same stank and same crazy high TDS. Of course, same ruptured DI cartridge.

Take 15 mile trip to Spectrapure (boy am I glad they're local). Friendly service guy (who I've known for a while) agrees to do a quick diagnosis while I wait even though they're really busy (Spectrapure has great customer service).

Hear a bit of laughter from the back room and friendly service guy comes out with a bit of a smile...

And for big reveal...

I installed the RO membrane backwards.:crazy1: New RO and DI and I'm back in business.

If a plumbing mistake can be made, I've made it twice.
