Duncan Question

giants4pc, both of your pictures look like majano..

I have some in my tank that move....look like duncan but the stalk is soft, tentacles are sticky, they move and split like crazy. Mine are super nice looking though, green with hot pink tips.

All freshly arrived Aussie Duncans somehow tend to show different (bleached) color morphs with smaller polyps and over a certain period of time if baked under intense MH lights they will all turn to the Neon Green with the polyps expanded much, much fluffy and bigger!

Following this thread just makes me laugh with the amount of people who think that these Duncans are Majanos. I think a lot of people need to do some more research and reading before making comments.

Giants4PC, yours is definitely a Duncan and NOT a Majano (pest) anemone.

There are many different type of duncans. I have two that look exactly the same as giants4pc's duncans but they are glued to plugs, they do not have a calcium skeleton (yet) and they are definitely duncans, just not the Australian version.

All duncans originated in Australia. They are endimic to australia.

That is incorrect. Check out Veron and you will see that they are located around the Northern coast of Austrailia and also up through Vietnam and the Gulf of Thailand.

Here is a link to the online version of Veron showing the range.

well, since that site that you just brought all of us to shows that they have "long tubular corallites which bifurcate at irregular intervals"

which is a skeletal base, long and tubular...

if its soft and squishy, its not a duncan, its a rip off that someone is trying to make money off of.

Actually they are not soft and squishy. They have just been fragged at the bottom of the tissue instead of leaving some of the base. They take longer to heal and start multiplying but they are still duncans. Mine started growing a calcium base after a couple months.

^ Yes duncans require target feeding. They're actually part of the same family, dendrophylliida, as the sun coral.

I absolutely love my duncan. It's without a doubt my favorite piece. Now I just need more :)
Duncans do not require target feeding though they love it. I feed my fish and that takes care of mine. They are highly autotrophic and photosynthesis will meet almost all of their needs.

I havent fed this thing since ive had it........I do feed my fish all they can eat though and rely on fish poop to feed all of my stonies.....

it doesnt look like its too hungry I dont think........ :)

giants4p- I hope you wnet back into that store and asked them politely to pull their you know what out of you know where and give a refund along with a apology frag.......

well, yeah, if they cut just the head, but as you said-it grew the calcium base... Did it multiply just heads without a base? I seriously doubt it.. and I doubt they went on the move like an anemone.

questions about were to keep duncans, i have a long stem with 3 full heads on it with about 8 tiny new heads starting to come out near larger heads and i was wanting to know best place to keep in tank, i have aquactinics HO t5 fixture with 5 54 watts bulbs and is very bright so should i keep near bottom, middle, or higher up and in low or medium flow.

Mine are under a 14K 250 watt MH. They are about 12" or so under the water, and the bulb is another 15" or so off the water, to give you an idea where I have mine. The polyps get about silver dollar size.

I have some in a 24 inch tank under 250 14 k mh about a foot off the bottom and another uder pc about a foot off the bottom. They are all doing well. It seems they can do well in a variety of lighting.

these are nice lookin corals but here in st. louis area only one pet store out of about 8 carry duncans and mine with 4 heads was 90 bucks and the other with 7 heads was 150.00. Cool thing is the 4 heads i got have 3 to 4 new heads coming out under big one already. Do you guys target feed like once a week or maybe twice.

They do grow, sespecially if they get a little food. I have three colonies. Each started as two polyps. Each is 6 to 8 after about 9 months.

I bought my colony about 4 months ago. It had 13 heads on it.
I have it on the bottom of my tank in relatively moderate flow and now there are too many heads to count. I would say there are 4-7 heads on each mother head. I rarely feed them, but I feed my tank heavy with 30 plus fish to feed.
