so i just got this mini colony back from boarding at a friends house and i have noticed some weird pink tissue-like growth on the bottom of the coral. it originally had a lime green tissue covering the base like this...

needless to say, there was some death on the coral in the months that it was away. now it has this pink smooth, fleshy growth...

in the pic with flash, the brownish areas are the same color as the bright pink, but the flash on the iphone is a bit much...

this is what it looks like when happy...

any ideas? or is this just new growth? and will it turn green again?

You sure it's the same duncan? I think they're 2 different types of duncans. I have both in my tank. 2nd one has much smaller heads and grow rather close to each other.

the first pic is from google, only for color reference. sorry about that. the rest are all the same coral. the funny thing is new heads are showing up every week. and the color under my t5's is great. but the underside has me wondering...

Mine acts funny and looks like that for a few days, and then I notice a new head forming.I have read they form new heads vary fast. But my experiance is about one per month.I cannot wait till mine looks like yours.I started with only one head.

I think that yor polyp heads are so big and dense that they are blocking a lot of light on the branches. Thus loosing that bright green color. When I take photos mine they have that same brownish, pink with a dusting of green color on the branches. As long as their is no loss of tissue , I think they should be alright!

ok awesome because it looks like the tissue is starting to cover the dead portions of the coral. so i was hoping it was simply new growth. it has about 30 full heads, but all very close together. takes the shape of a great live oak tree when fully inflated [correct term???].

@ sandhog

i am seeing new heads all the time. i have been feeding them with a soda bottle. i cut the bottom off a 1 liter Big Red, place it over duncans and squeeze some arctipods/oysterfeast mixture into it the top. they get all big and fat and grab what they can. i usually leave it for about ten minutes. then move on to my clams. same process but with phytofeast/oysterfeast mixture.

its a pink sponge i think. had some covering the bass of my hammer. didnt seem to do anything, but my hammer mysteriously died quickly after a while..

I'll agree that it's some sort of sponge. I had 2 flower pots, one had this pinkis film on top of the polyps that I noticed covered most of the polyps. I removed the film and the flower pot is slowly getting petter. Or do you have any aggressive corals next to it (i.e. war coral, echinata) that might have waged nuclear war on it? I would try to lightly try to take the film off one of the heads and see if you see the duncan under it. GOOD LUCK!

at first i thought it was a sponge also but the pink growth isn't 'spongy' it is fleshy and tissue-like. also it is only growing on 'dead' spots on the coral-well, so far. i will try and remove some. any ideas on what to use for the removal? i got some extra-long tweezers i can try.

well, for those interested...

i couldn't remove the pink tissue but i figured that if it was indeed a sponge that i could kill it easy. i took the coral out of the water and basically massaged the sponge tissue to release the water it was holding. then i just put it back in the tank...and i think it is working because it has gone from electric pink to white. pretty simple fix, hope it continues to work.

oops...forgot pics
