Dyed Nems?

I was at my LFS this morning looking for a good nem or pair of clowns for my tank. I appreciate the help of the young man working and gave me a heads up on a type of nem I've not heard of before called a yellow Hawian?? He said he thought they were dyed and that the distributor may have been pulling a fast one. Anyone else ever hear of dying a nem? crazy....

Needless to say I came home with nothing as their offerings looked pretty stressed all the way around today.

What would be a good choice for a 180g with 250w halides. I had a long tenticle a few years ago but he would just not get settled in. After 2 rounds with the power heads I gave him to a fellow reefer. He was the size of a dinner plate and beautiful. I'd like to get another and some clowns that will actually host. Love some input there as well.

Yes unfortunatly many nems are dyed before they arrive at the LFS. Carpets and long tenticles seem to be the most often seen ones.

Often when I see a brightly colored anenome at a LFS, I assume dyes. I wonder how long do these dyes last inside the anenome before it starts fading? Would be helpful to know to observe these guys at the store.

My magnificent Anemone was brown now it is white.
Guy @ the lfs told me it must have been dyed.
Kinda weird since it looks a lot better now.

A white anemone is bleached and unhealthy. They usually dye anemones bright, appealing colors. I highly doubt they would dye an anemone brown.

I thought marine animals could only be dyed pink or yellow? just a rumer i heard.


Jorgens, you could try a Haddoni carpet nem, they dont move around too much, stay near the bottom of the tank so thers really no worries about the powerheads and once they are settled in they can be pretty hardy.

The latest trend seems to be blue dyed LTAs. So there's another color they can use.

dyes can come in any colour... White is bleached out.. Either lack of light, food, too much light or other outside factors can contribute.
