Eagles - Alaskan style!

+1 on the dialed in eagle shooting thing.

A gerbil! Priceless. Come to think of it, there are a LOT of cats around here...

Heh, dang you. I liked my eagle pictures until this thread ;)

Sigh, I need to get a good telephoto now.

Your shots were good. You just got your camera, you're doing awesome.

wow- fantastic shots Louis. Nicely done. Im loving the lighting on the first especially. seems like you have the eagle shooting dialed in!

Thanks - yeah, most were freehanded. I started leaning on my tripod though because the 200mm f2.8 gets heavy after a while. The portraits I took were tripod mounted and I did take some flight shots panning with the camera mounted and ballhead loose.

Your post reminded me of a picture I've seen. I searched the web and found it. Cats seem to like Eagles :)

This is NOT my image, I just snagged it off the web for your enjoyment.

Yeah I saw that on the web to. It had a caption that went something like; "This will end in disaster and you have nobody to blame but yourself".

There was a story in the paper a number of years ago where the writter witnessed a bald eagle swoop in and snatch up one of those little dogs of an older couple with an RV. Apparently the women was freaking out and her husband was behind the RV laughing (or something to that effect).

A park ranger told me a great horned owl swooped in and took a cat from her. If you've never seen an Eagle up close you should. Find a raptor center or the zoo. They are quite impressive!

1+ on this- i think id struggle to get anything remotely close to sharp.

wow- props on that- can't believe how crisp and sharp everything looks. Makes me really want to get a longer lens to go after those 'out of reach subjects'...

Thanks again for sharing Louis- its excellent to see some high caliber photography here on R.C.

That would be sick, and I am always on the hunt for that shot :).

There was an interesting piece written several years ago about the "ethics" of wildlife photography. Apparently Audborn published an image of an owl capturing some pray. A reader noticed that it was a gerbil! The photographer tried to pawn it off on the mag hoping no one would notice I guess (LMAO).

Now I'm gonna have to dig through my Alaska vacation pictures. I have a shot (though probably not that good) of an eagle snatching a puffin out of the air. Was actually trying to shoot the puffin when the eagle literally stole my shot.

The light on the second day was just perfect. Sun low in the sky so it was warm. Also there was a thin cloud layer here and there. It acted like a diffuser so the light was real soft, virtually eliminating harsh shadows or blown highlights.

Perfect. Sharp focus. Completely stopped action. Can see detail on the underside of the wings despite the light source being from above. Breathing room around the wing tips before the frame edge. Well done.

Visually your name / watermark would be better lower and to the left, but then you run the risk of unscrupulous people cropping the pic tight and removing it.

Just to keep your head from swelling too much, next time please have the eagle preen the feathers on the inner part of his right wing. There are a couple out of line. ;)

You're making me want to purchase an absurdly long lens and hop on a plane!

Seriously, awesome job.

Do man, do it! Though do it in the fall so you can get some killer large mamal shots too ;).

PS: yeah, that NY'ker in me is always paranoid about theft. I used to never even put my best shots online. I've slacked there lately, though there are some gems that still stay in my private archives. I used to lay the watermark over the subject! Still, with PS you can clean up just about anything these days anyway. If someone wants it and has an ounce of skill they'll have it.
