Ebay MH bulbs

This is what I wrote to LSE reguarding the bulb I got:

I recieved the bulb on Firday. However, the bulb had black blotches on the
inner glass plus it broke when inserting the bulb in the socket. I used very
little force. I would like a replacement or a refund if posible. Thanks

This was there Response:

Nick,

We have over 30,000 of these in stock, all have dark spots in the middle,
that’s not the issue.

Regards

Now It seems like I wrote somthing to **** him off, Is it just me or??
either way My issue was not addressed in the email.

Make him send you replacements at least you can keep them in the drawer for backup bulbs. He counts on people giving up. He told me he sent my replacements 3 different times and even blamed the post office. I sent him an email back saying how convenient that you blame the post office but don't send it insured or with delivery confirmation. I then accused him of theft and told him Philly was not that far of a drive for me to come pick them up in person. I had new bulbs in 3 days...:lmao: He is a Piece of $#@* IMO and one step away from being a criminal. He sells garbage. You know what they say, Karma is a *****. I hope one of his bulbs shorts and burns his entire warehouse down when nobody is in it.

Well here is my experience.

On Jan 6th, I ordered 3 14,000K Artemis bulbs from Hobby Lighting on E-bay.
I got them Jan 12th and installed them the next day.
On Jan 19th, one of the bulbs didn't come on - I tested it and it was the bulb.
I contacted them for warranty and they replied right away and after paying $9 return shipping, I got the bulb Jan 28th, installed it and it work fine.
Feb 25th, one of the other bulbs went. I didn't bother with the warranty on that one and replaced it with one of my older bulbs.
March 10, the other one went. I decided to contact them again......No response after 3 days so I sent them another e-mail telling them that I had friends that bought the 10,000K and had no problems with them (which is true) and I wanted to get those along with the replacement. That day, I got this:

"I am sorry, I did not saw your last email, otherwise I will respond to you right away. To be very honest, we never had similar report that 3 bulbs burnt out within 3 months from one customer. So I think that maybe the bulbs and your ballast are not compatible which leads the result. If you still want to try our 10k bulbs, I can certainly send the replacement bulbs with your new order. I will put a UPS retunr lable in the package, please kindly return the 2 burnt bulbs back to us. An invoice will be sent to your paypal now."

I received a paypal e-mail invoice for 3 10,000K Artemis bulbs. Needless to say, I'm not going to get them.

It does seem odd that all three bulbs have died within 56 days and the one replacement they have sent me has been working for 45 days now. Could it be true that my ballast aren't compatible with this bulb? What kind of ballast are people running that have had problems with either the Artemis or the Plusrite bulbs. I'm using 250W ice cap ballast.

I got some ebay bulbs just to get me started, but from all of the responses I'm reading here it sounds to me like you just have to cough up the dough and remember the old saying "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price has been long forgotten." I'll see how my cheap ebay bulbs work...color is nice now, but we'll see how long they last.

I've been following this thread since I just recently got an MH HQI 150watt light set up for my Vivarium.

I saw the cheap bulbs on eBay and after reading some positive reviews from people here and there, I decided to get one. a 6500k in exact.

I got it from the user Lightspectrum on eBay which is actualy LSE.

When I got my bulb the other day, I opened it and the bulb looks used! The bulb wasn't all clear like the bulb that came already with the MH light setup I just recently got.

the bulb had the white residue in the sides inside of the bulb already. Plus the bulb did not look like it was a 6500k at all. It looked purple even after a whole day of it running.

So I sent the seller a message on eBay about it. A day passes and no response. So I sent another one and still no response from him. Now I opened a dispute on eBay, so I can get a replacement for this bulb, either that or get a refund. :(

this seller sucks! I can't believe he doesn't have any negative feedbacks at all on eBay

He has a bunch of negative reviews in this thread with exactly the same problems, that should have been a hint. Look at the post above yours.

raimeiken, I ordered multiple 20k bulbs from LSE and they were ALL white, not 20k blue. I just started using MHs so I wasn't sure if they would break in and change color but they didn't, they just broke. I recently ordered 3 20k ARTEMIS bulbs from ebay and they were even cheaper, but so far they have been great KNOCK KNOCK. At least the color has been great. Very blue, pry not as blue as high dollar 20k's, but I have no experience with expensive bulbs, yet. These bulbs fire everytime and I think the sellers name was hobby lighting or something. Cheers.

I was thinking of just getting the bulb from fishneedit.com since I got my lighting fixture from there. I got the 8000k originally with the fixture and I wasnt really content with it that's why I tried the eBay bulb. but after using that crappy eBay bulb, the 8000k that I originally had actually looks good now lol

What does 6500k and 8000k look like? Are you running fresh water tank? I have only read about people using 10k,14k, and 20k bulbs for reef tanks.

sorry, Im only posting here because this is the biggest discussion I could find on google about this seller thats why I registered here. I do not have a reef tank. I have a Vivarium. I grow lots of different plants in it, that's why I'm using 6500k and 8000k bulbs. These two colors are suppose to look like natural sunlight. whitish/greenish and a bit yellowish.

Here's a link to my album of my Vivarium from it's beginnings to more recent shots if anyone cares lol!

phiber is right, he is a fibber LOL
I'm glad he summed up all lighting sellers on ebay. He must have spent a ton of time and money trying them all out. HEHE

Welcome Rai! Thanks for posting here. I have never seen a vivarium before. I think that is awesome. Let us know what results you get with the various bulbs you try.

Thanks guys!

My plants are definitely liking that 8000k bulb i got from fishneedit. They're colored a lot and lots of new growth. This could also be a result from upgrading from CF lights into MH.

anyway, an update with my eBay dispute with LSE. they finally replied back and said that they don't carry or ship out used bulbs even though the one I got was clearly used. So now they're shipping another one to me free of charge. Hopefully this one will be the right color this time.

Glad to hear the plants are liking the new bulbs.

As for the bulbs looking used, a lot of times they test the bulbs first, which may or may not make the black and brown marks on them. I know the ones I got from LSE had marks on every bulb, but the Artemis bulbs did not, they look clean and new.

My thought is that manufacturers have to test every so many bulbs and when they do they sell them to a scumbag like Arthur at LSE. JMO.

Well I just got the replacement bulb from the mail and it looks like he sent me another wrong bulb. It looks like a used bulb again, but I don't know if they test these bulbs first or not.

what do you guys think?

the label says it's a blue one even though I told him I wanted a bulb that looks more like natural daylight. More on the white/yellowish/greenish side. Not purple like the last one he gave me.

the light does look blue just like what the label said.

sure enough after a few minutes of it turned on, it's looking purplish pink again like the last one he gave me :( it's more obvious in person. But you can kinda see what I'm talking about

I don't know what to do now. should I ask for a refund or just give him a negative feedback? If I ask for a refund, he'll more than likely would want these bulbs back which I'll have to spend money to ship back.
