Situation got worst….

I dip all my corals again and situation seems to get worst as one more acro turn STN on me.

Thanks Flo - yeah the frustrating part for me is 1. having this problem 2. Not knowing how/ where it comes from??

:mad2:

Still can't figure what went wrong?

Still can't figure what went wrong?

Took some close-up to see if there is something I missed.

The dark spots which some pointed out as suspected AEFW eggs is actually some sort of red algae. I've dip and dip but nothing drops out so far.

As for my birdnest, it looks more like something taken bites off the flesh and the symptom is unlike lack of flow. Maybe I got some gorilla crabs around??

Meanwhile the bite marks on my stag seem likely cause by AEFW but problem is I cannot see them (could be due to poor eyesight from my end) but will leave it for a week before I dip again as those corals are all crazy stress already"¦.

Not sure what else I can do apart from ensuring a stable params"¦.

:sad1:

Ed, sorry to hear about your loss. I had a similar aquacultured staghorn with similar STN. I also suspected AEFW but didn't found any.
Have you already took a bit of the Staghorn to do a Freshwater check?

You were right about the suspicious area, these aren't eggs, but some form of algae.

About the RTN'ning coral. Did you dip that one? And what dip did you use? I found that most corals can handle a Levamisole dip much better then an Iodine (TMPCC) dip. And their both effective.

Good luck,

Leonardo

Thanks Leo - no, I didn't do any FW dip with the acros but I used CoralRx instead but nothing found, apart from some pods....

The one that RTN on me I believe is cause by stress from the dipping process and not by AEFW.

My plan is now to leave it and try not to stress them further and keep a close watch. The TN seem to have stop and no new bite marks are currently observed (maybe I'm trying too hard to see...)

Later tonight I will also try the red LED torchlight trick to see if I can spot any critters munchers in there??

Good idea to try to spot them at night, although they still are very hard to see.
I also would suggest not to stress the coral any further, also because you didn't found any AEFW.

I also experienced RTN after dips, it is very sad, but you will end up with (Mariculture) corals that are capable to handle some stress and adaptable to tank conditions. That corals can grow out and flourish.
I always thought like this after a loss, I hope it makes you feel a bit better too.

Sorry for your troubles Ed. Hope you're able to turn it around.

Thanks Bob - things are looking much better this weekend as all TN has stop and no new bite marks so we will see if the dips did their works or they know I'm watching :hammer:

Thanks Leo - yeah wild colonies are more sensitive for sure to dips as it's just not natural to them :eek1:

So far this weekend all seems cheerful and corals are looking back like 'normal'

Any salt spray? will the tunze "spill" the h20 over since yours is braceless. Well i am asking my local tank maker to give me a quotation on the 3.5x3x1.5 EOS braceless tank.

it shld be up b4 x'mas

Hi Zorden - my Tunze is position almost to the ground (maybe about 3-4" off the base of the tank) pointing upwards. This way you won't get water over the edge and also great turbulence surface :D

I get a little salt creep over the edge of the rimless but that's to be expected so nothing a 1 min daily wipe down with a towel won't resolved :crazy1:

ok no biggie i can do that... :)

Water parameter udpates…..

Water parameter udpates"¦..

And did my usual weekly 10% WC and check my water params as below:

"¢ Temperature "“ 26.4 degree C (light on for 2 hours)
"¢ Salinity Gravity "“ 34.4ppt lower than last week 0.6)
"¢ pH "“ 8.32 (light on)
"¢ NO3 "“ 0.00 (Salifert Test kit "“ same as last week)
"¢ PO4 "“ 0.008 (D&D Test kit "“ down from last week 0.015)
"¢ dKH "“ 8.0 (API test kit "“ same as last week)
"¢ dKH "“ 8.0 (Elos test kit "“ same as last week)
"¢ Ca "“ 440 (Salifert test kit "“ down from last week 450)
"¢ Mg "“ 1350 (Salifert test kit "“ same as last week)
"¢ Mg "“ 1300 (Elos test kit "“ same as last week)
"¢ Potassium "“ 400 to 410 range (Kz Test kit "“ same as last week)

After exchanging out my RO water unit 1st and 2nd filter and my DI resin, my PO4 is back down again"¦.

Other params stable. The corals are looking a little better today and no new bite marks evident anywhere so hopefully it stays that way"¦.

Absolutely stunning tank Ed,

I've recently gone through the whole AEFW and found that a daily blast from a
turkey baster did wonders, it easily dislodged any FW and must have disturbed thier breeding habbits enough to wipe them out in under a fortnight.

Dipping did nothing for me except for a whole lot of rtn and dead stags :(

Good luck I hope your ontop of it now

Ed, that sps damage looks suspiciously like this ...

Reef027.jpg

Which started at the base and moved up a bit more each night ... and this is what was doing the damage. The dark bit below is damage that algae has established on.

Snail001.jpg

I do a nightly boundary ride of the tank at about 10:30pm and pick them out. They range in size and colour ... 10mm to barely visible and red to white. So far over a 5 week period I've pulled around 50 of them ... only getting one or two every other night now so I think that its nearly over for them.

Good luck, mate!

Tone :)

Thanks Timmy...... I did blast daily but the current problem I have is I'm not seeing them. Kinda hard to fight an invisible enemy :hammer:

I agree, seem I kill more SPS with dipping than any other natural causes...
