Electric bill trhough the roof... ouch

I agree with Nicole. My elec bill only went up about $40 when I setup my tank. And since adding the chiller I have not seen a measureable difference.

I think using dedicated 20Amp circuits is more efficient than pushing a 15 Amp circuit. I may be wrong.

We run our AC sometimes in the summer, so my bills this time of year are a little higher than normal, but still under $200.

I think turning off the house AC will reduce your elec bill more than turning off your tanks.

I found a solution to the DWP problem... it's called "cash out Refi..." ;)

at least you still get to keep your corals :D

my electricity bill went down $100 or so this month...

but it is a false sense of security as it went for $568 to $450 (or so)...

i run my ac only at 2pm to 5-6pm. the hottest part of the day. the rest of the day is more than tolerable.

what i did was ventilate the garage where all my equipment is as much as possible. i also circulate the air in there too! equipment in the garage can create horrific temp swings on a tank without good temp management systems in place. the price for a quiet display, not having to crawl under a stand to maintenance equipment and do water changes as messy as i want.

what may have made a huge difference in the $100 saving was getting a second and even more powerful vornado fan to place on top of my secondary sump. in addition, i switched to my 'summer' lighting schedule of 6pm to 12am.

the white one on the right i have had for 3 years and puts out a ton of air for 55 watts. the newer gray one on the left uses 120 watts on max but puts out a ridiculous amount of air that the chiller rarely comes on even with garage temps climbing into the 110 to 120 before i ventilate the garage.

Mine was $176 for the last period.

The next period should be the same except we are running the house AC a little less, (not at night anymore).

Josh

Time for me to eat crow.

A bill arrived from Edison yesterday, we opened it today, it was $274. This is for approximately the same usage as the last period, ($176). My wife says Edison raised their rates about 55%.

I feel your pain Bryan, I didn't know Edison was going to do this to us. You just got your updated bill before I did.

Cheers

It's happening to everyone, Josh. They charge more for the same thing every summer and then they come up with a new excuse to raise the baseline rates on top of that, so that it ends up more every year.

In 25 years, we'll all have $1,000 a month power bills. Mark my words.

Time to turn to the sun, folks.

These tips really work, but only if you have signed up for the "time of use" program.

what's the time of use program?

All the estimates that solar power takes 5-10 years to pay back are flawed. The assume that rates will stay the same, and that you are not in tier 3 for all the electricity that would be replaced by the solar. When I did the math it looked more like 2-2.5 years with only a 10% increase over the next five years. This is assuming you get all the rebates though.

I think at this rate I will hit $1000 in summer 2008 if not sooner :(. Need to down size :)

Hopefully in 25 year we all are making $700,000 - 2.5M / year too :)

Something weird is going down with Edison that's for sure. May bill was $34. June bill is $308 *faint*

I phoned them this morning and they're going to do a "meter verification". I don't even have a tank anymore ! That's ridiculous for a 1 bd. apt. with a window a/c I only used a few times last month. The highest bill I had last summer was $85 and that was when I left for a week and forgot and left the a/c on 24/7 for the whole week.

So Cal Edison is so corrupt its just outta control!!!

my bill this last month at my house was $360.... compared to last year it was $120 so i know i got a bigger better fish tank but they have also raised the rates beyond belief and theres nothing we can do about it....

if u look at there bill theres baseline over baseline more over baseline way over baseline and thats it ur getting charged as much as we can charge u overbaseline rate!

then they have winter and summer surcharges and delivery charges and then miscelaneous charges and so on!!!

its driving me nuts i dont even wanna see next months bill using AC im guna die and then get rid of the tank!

for those of you that have large increases in your bill, call and ask if they are estimating your usage or if they are actually reading your meter. you'd be surprised how often they estimate your usage and thus charge you way too much.

Am I a total a-hole if my bill was $60 last month, $68 the month before and $70 for April? I have a 60gal with a bunch of mag pumps, 2 175w halides, fans, ca reactor, etc. I also have a plasma, 27" tube tv, large PC w/3 lcd monitors for major power hogs. I just installed a window AC unit so I'm expecting to pay at least double, but that will still be cheap.
I do have a gas stove & dryer, do you think any other of your appliances are hogging power? Inefficient dryer, stove, etc?

My wife called edison today, they claim our usage during the bill's period was three times that of the previous billing period.

We don't really use our A/C much. It's set to 82, but it doesn't come on often.

I just can't remember what we did last period that accounted for a 300% increase in usage.

The bill mentioned a 55% increase, and that sucks. But for them to state that we used 300% more energy than we normally do, that just doesn't make sense.

Ok people, time to start up a solar "group buy". Maybe if we can place an order for 10-20 roofs we can get a deal?

Cheers
Josh

Luckily the new LED lighting systems are here to save us and our energy consumption... Not to mention cooling costs and bulb replacement.

Solaris LED Quarium Lighting

SWEET!!! Only $2300 for a 48" fixture!

Actaully it says they last 50,000 hours...that's over 11 years at 12hrs/day!! Cant wait to hear more about them.
