electricity in tank?!!!

I have had a tank leak and stepped into the wet saltwater soaked carpet with bare feet, just skivy's and a beer, only to wake up on the ground about 6 feet back and spilled beer everywhere good thing I fell out of the wet zone. As this post was about stray voltage in the tank originally I think the way to get that out if you want to has been pretty clearly put at a grounding probe.

Not sure what a grounding probe in a tank would do about wet carpet but that will teach you to set your beer down when ever working around your tank.... hate wasting good beer....

Oh and always have on clean undies, the paramedics will laugh at you if you have skid marks..

Having had this problem myself, you probably don't have your outlet grounded where everything plugs into, and take this opportunity to get a GFCI circuit as other have mentioned, argued and eventually agreed to disagree.

You can check to see if it's grounded by getting a three prong ground fault indicator they're only a few bucks, but really you need a GFCI. We play in water while touching electricity...how much is your life worth?

Thanks! I will look into getting GFI (If there available here) and a three prong ground fault indicator. Would they both be from electrical stores?

I don't know if anyone has died from their fish tank... but hopefully from this discussion we've all increased our chances of survival !! :)

I have not found any documented fatalities yet... some cowboy was playing around his tank drinking beer in his undies that got shocked (good visual huh, must have been the metal trailer floor that got him) No one is sure what happend to his broomstick pony and hat....

Seems the fish are in far greater peril from us humans. (fish have been seen to sabotage heaters in attempts to kill their human keepers, Read this in the Atlantic Enquirer , lowtide version)

Any hardware store will have these. You will need to find out what amp circuit you're running from the circuit breaker like 15 amp, and then buy that same amp GFCI. You'll also need to decide what other outlets you want running on this if any. I have a dedicated 20 amp GFCI at the tank so it is the only outlet, and the other (2) 15 amp GFCI circuits are in the garage where most of my equipment is.

Hope this helps.

Ahhhh! could account for why I couldnt find confirmed kills by tanks....

What nobody ever rolled out of bed at 8:30 grabbed a beer and wandered over to the tank only to find it 1/2 full and a wet floor....????...:) Jeeesh you guy's haven't lived, that was 20 years ago in my Bachelor pad, we had no sump, no special lighting, no power heads just water and fish... I had a blast with that tank but man was it a lot of work...
