Emperor Angle Likes to make croaking noises

I had my Christmas island Emperor in my tank for a while. I guess I have never really paid attention to tank late at night. Right now moonlights are on. Fish are all swimming happily. The emperor is making croaking noises. Not sure what this means. No one is bothering it. The fish is just swimming back and form and letting off loud croaking noises I can hear from across room. Anyone know what this is about?

Mine used to do it, as soon as he saw me... I always told everyone that he was 'saying'... "Feed me!"

normal for imp to croak but usually when annoyed, PO'd, hungry or SOME reason

if mine was doing this I would get concerned.

Something doesn't sound right.

agree, with Gary...some of my large angels do it but it is done as a warning or threat.. have never had an angel do it just for the fun of it....

I guess I misunderstood the op. Is the question if being able to grunt is normal, or when and why they do it?

The Emperor is likely grunting as a warning to its own reflection, aka.the other Emp in his tank :) Even with the shimmer of the moonlights, I am sure there is still a bit of light shimmer/reflection on the front glass. Previous Emps I have owned only grunted when hungry or to warn other fish to get out of the way.

Grunting

Grunting

LOL

you guys are right. The emperor grunts when i stand in front of the tank. It swims up to me and follows me. It is grunting for food. I also noticed it grunt at other fish when competing for a cave to hang out in.

Interesting behavior for a fish. This fish has a cool personality. LOL
