i bought a engineer goby a couple weeks ago (thinking it was a neon goby) and i havent seen it since, i was assuming it was dead, but every so often when a fish swims by this certain rock in the tank a huge cloud of sand is kicked up (not by the fish swimming by) do you think this could be the goby?

That used to happen when I had a Diamond goby...I never associated that with the goby but now that its gone I dont seem to ever see that happen.

They will spit sand/rocks at fish who wander too close to their burrows, so it sounds very much like he is still alive. Make sure your rock stack is secure.

thats the reason i wanted a neon goby, i wanted a small fish that would swim around in the open, i had been researching about the engineer, then i found out about the rock thing, so my rocks are not sucur, if i just pushed the rocks into the sand would that make them more secure?

Where'd you get the rock? Sounds like it's sandstone. :p

LOL

It should be obvious if the Engineer is still around. There should be big piles of sand all around the rock it's living under.

As far as the stable rock stack, it's very true that they topple rocks by digging under them. I've even had Cinder blocks fall over from their digging.

If you plan on keeping him I'd use pvc frames to secure the rock, otherwise you have a good chance of a rock slide occurring.

i got it from natures best fish and creature comfots, i think its figi
please don't accuse CC of selling you Fiji sandstone!
(I was kidding around!)

Find him yet? I had one... the guy built a new home under a new rock every day. Stirred up the sand in a huuuuge way.

Neat fish though. =)

My engineer is now about 10 inches long. He rearranges the sand bed constantly. I just recently removed some rock and I see him all the time. He comes out and swims all over the place. He is a very cool fish and worth the mess.
