Englishrebel's 260 Gallon System Build

Thanks Sandy and Tone. The pictures I posted a page back show the GHA at the LH end that is now gone. I may have to pull the Turbos soon and send them back to the store. Does anyone know if the Trochus snails eat detritus because I can't vacuum my sand as my lights are in the way. They pretty much cover 70% of the tank and the only way to get in to clean is to pull them off. I do this about every month so I can clean the glass at the sand level (I don't dare get my MagFloat that close to the sand as I'm scared of picking up grains of sand -- Starphire glass is softer than regular and can scratch easier).

As you know I don't have a calcium reactor -- I'm using the Bulk Reef Supply three part dosing system with my Profilux dosing pump.

Because I started dosing Calc and Alk five days ago I'm keeping an eye on my numbers. 5 days ago my Calcium was 340 and now it's 400, so the 50.0 mL 8 times a day of the Calc solution is bringing it up. I will check again in a few days to see if it's at 420-440 and I can then back off on the dosing to maintain it at that level. 5 days ago my Alk was 11.6 dkH now it's 13.4 so I've backed off on the Alk dose from 5.0 mL 8 times a day to 0.5 mL 8 times a day. My Magnesium has been steady at 1200 ppm for months.
And I think I'll do a remake of that Peter Sellers movie 'Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb' and call it:

EnglishRebel or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love My PH"

Oh and by the way, the "snow" storm that I got every time I turned the main pump back on has disappeared -- which makes me happy. :)

Yes but I deleted the duplicate.

But maybe I'm trying to boost my post count so I can get to 15721 just like you Tom.

Then you just make post with a smiley. :D

Tom
My calcium is back up to 460 and my alk is now at 11.6. I'm going to check again in a few days and the probably stop the Alk dosing and back off on the Calc if the reading is up around 480 or so to try and maintain it at that level. I guess it's no different than dialing in a calcium reactor -- you just need to get the calcium addition to where it's balancing the uptake by the corals.
BTW did you see this thread on low PH? RC thread

PS One closer to 15728 :p
Wait a minute. Your post count is going up. What's the deal - I thought you were stuck at the count ceiling. Are you manipulating it manually? ;)

It does slow me down to re-read a 3 page pH thread on the Chem forum. Can't post when reading.;) I guess I could get some brownie points by supplying the pH to alkalinity relationship charts that Jonathan couldn't find. :D

As you can see low pH is a common problems. I liked the suggestions that jdieck gave. You should give them a try.

Here is one more suggestion. Remember those gas washing bottles from chem lab?

That's about a $200 model pictured but you can do it with a tall bottle and two hole rubber stopper for a few bucks. The air intake tube goes to the bottom of the bottle and is submerged in an over staturated solution of KW. You want lots of undissolved calcium hydroxide precipitate as it will slowly dissolve over time. The air discharge is located above the solution level and feeds the skimmers air intake. Room air bubbles through the KW solution and is stripped of carbon dioxide. The filtered air then bubbles through the skimmer stripped of carbon dioxide. You may need to adjust the skimmer somewhat as the solution adds resistance.

Since the skimmer provides a major amount of the dissolved air entering the tank, that may be enough to help boost pH.

Just a thought.

Wow. That's a cool idea, Tom. Thanks! My pH is finally hanging steady at 8.2-8.4 through the day with just kalkwasser, but I have it filed away for later. Probably for when I ever wind up cranking up the calcium reactor. Certainly no need for it yet.

Update
Well my cyanobacteria has gone. I pulled out some clumps and the rest has disappeared. The green hair algae is also on the wain as the the Trochus and Turbo snails are slowly getting it under control. Probably just New Tank Syndrome. :)

I am experiencing the same thing... you know, the bubbles under the purple crap at the end of the light cycle...

What did you do and how long did it take?
