I did the same thing on both of my CS6-1s that I have. I used PVC and a ball balve instead of the more costly gate valve. Total cost maybe $6.

I bought the Euroreef gate valve assembly and yes you can do it MUCH cheaper at any hardware store. It's a must do -- between the gate valve and the air intake you have a lot of control over skimmer output...

The reason I did the mod was because I have no "sumps" and had to make the skimmers "stand alone" outside the tanks.
