Quick question for all the experts. I bought a ES 8-2 with the sedra 5000. I havent been able to get it to pull any skimate in a week. Ive followed euros advice and soaked pump in veniger solution and still no change., I just cant adjust the riser pipe enough to get the bubbles high in the tube. Im to the point of ordering a new pump but wanted to know if I should buy the sedra 9000 or would that cause a problem? its really not much more expensive so if it will be better Id rather get a bigger pump.
Whats yalls opinions or has anyone done this?thanks

I would get an OR 3700 instead... the old school sedras including the sedra 9000 with NW are exceedingly weak... All you really need to use the OR 3700 is just pop the sedra 5000 venturi onto the OR 3700 and get ready for a lot of bubbles. :)

For example, on my RC skimmer with OR 3700. That thing pulls about 15 SCFH with about 12" of head above the inlet. The sedra 9000 pulled 5 (Pitiful in my opinion).

Peace,
John H.

Gate Valve Mod pipe size on a CS 6-1?

Gate Valve Mod pipe size on a CS 6-1?

Looking to do the mod & wanted to know what size schedule 40 pipe do i need. Is it a 1-1/4" or 1-1/2"?

Also, planning to upgrade my sedra 3500 to a 5000.
Is the output elbow the same size for both pumps?

Thanks

ironman,

I'd look at upgrading to the SP4. It is quite a bit more powerful than the SP3. You can also check the ID of the SP3's venturi. It shoudl be 3/16". If it is not, try reaming it out in steps from 1/8" up to 3/16". You will see a big improvement in air intake.

Hope that helps.

A couple of weeks ago I posted about my new RC500. It has been running for about 10-12 weeks now and it is only pulling a small amount of skimmate. I made the adjustment recommended by Lunchbucket to loosen the ball valve handle so it would adjust more smoothly. That works fine but since doing so, my skimmer has overflowed THREE times. Fortunately, the skimmer is in my sump but still that is an issue.

I set the bubble level in the middle of the neck inside the collection cup. Which is where I have always kept it. Should I bring the bubble level down the the bottom of the collection cup? What is causing it to overflow, I wonder? Do I need to adjust the venturi valves. I have not in the past touched the valves.

Help me figure this out so I stop overflowing the skimmer.

HEy there Rebecca What i have done with my CS 250 with the dual pumps. I have the air wide open and with the gate valve I have it wide open then I mark at the top of the gate handle as 12 o clock.

Then I turn it 1 turn clock wise and i get some wicked foam ..

let me know if that works ok.

Mike,
Thanks for the suggestion but I have a ball valve so the adjustment may not be done the same way. The venturi valves are wide open.

On another note, the bubbles inside the neck between the skimmer body and the collection cup is full of large bubbles, while the smaller bubbles are in the body of the skimmer.

So what does that mean??

Rebecca

I agree with mike, but it is hard to tell without seeing it. All my small bubbles merge into larger groups of sticky bubbles before exiting to the cup. Before adjusting the air run some warm R.O. water through the airline to make sure they are clear.

Also consider lowering the level a bit inside the skimmer. You won't do any harm. Just leave it alone for a week and see if the top of the neck starts getting dirty. You can SLOWLY raise it later for wetter skim.

Last I think lunchbuckets instructions on adjusting the ball valves is fine, but the problem started after that adjustment. That is why I only use gate valves.

My skimmers will run for hours looking like they don't pull anything and then go nuts for a while and pull sludge. Kind of like the high and low tide cycle. What is flooding for you might be sludge pulling time for me, that why I suggest lowering the level a bit. I found the less fiddling I do with my skimmers the better. Good luck and Keep posting - folkls like Lunchbucket, Mike, and the ER sponsor are all providing good advice - You'll get that thing skimming - Add tons of live stock..Just Kidding

What pumps are you running? If they are the sedra 5000 (sp3), you may consider upgrading tp the sp4's.

Jim

I have a 12-1 that comes w/ 2 SP3's - I am doing the recirc and upgrade to the SP4's - That makes it a RC400 - which is coming out real soon. If you do the same mod to yours I think it essentially becomes a RC500 - 30" tall(but costs less). Also a gate valve mod will do wonders.

Can you give me more info on this mod? Just take a standard OR 3700 and swap the venturi and needle wheel from the Sedra 5000?

Just remember that a skimmer will only pull skim mater if there is some thing to pull out. I have had my skimmer pull for like 2-3 days straight and then not pull any crap out for a few more days.

ANd Rebecca with your skimmer some thing else hit me lst mnight if you are playing in your tank and moving any sand around or stiring up and crap in your tank. That will cause the bigger bubble at the top to happen.

Sorry I should have picked up on that when you told me.

THe SP-4's are they alot stronger are they. I have the CS 250 with the dual pumps I think they are the SP-4's SO making the rC model from mine will work alot easier I hope.

WHat will I need to start with the uni seals and the plumbing right?

Does any one knows the type of pluming that I need?
1/2" or 3/4 unions for x2
2x 45's
I will need todrill the top above the holes are right.

what else.

I have a ES5-2 w/ a Sedra 3500. The pump stopped working. I'm giving it a vinegar bath but if that doesn't work, can I try one of these SP pumps? Any other ideas on how to upgrade the pump?

There was probably a hang up somewhere. Either programing, staffing or plain out just not enough time. ER said it would happen and it will:)
