Hey folks . I have my old 8-2 pulling in a solid 13 scfh ......Should I tune it down to say 10 ?Would it help my skimate?

This is almost 2 days worth on my 180 .

I have a 6"lx1" wide bluespot tang a 5"PB tang, 7 wrasses,2med bicolors,2 bangi cardinals. Nitrates steady at 25ppm and po4 .oo.

Anyways should I be happy with this performance? Also take note that I have an asm g-3 running on the system also it has ozone going to it and both skimmers draw the same amount of air. The ASM has about the same depth as the ER but of course less skimate.

Pump is sedra 5000 with newly replaced NW.

clkwrk, I used to turn my 5-2 down to around 4lpm and had pretty decent pull out of it. Never used an 8-2, but the concept applies all over.

Lunch- I hear you buddy, I would be a skimmer ***** as well, and kind of am, but can't yet afford to throw around 25% of my monthly income on one, turn around and sell it a week later, then buy another like SOMEONE I know LOL!!

clkwk,

Your quote: "I used to remember filling the er cups up with foam and skimate???" is an important statement/question that will be addressed in detail within our new webpage that discuses skimmer ratings. It is a fine point that few hobbyists understand. It essentially has to do with DOC production and skimmer efficiency and equilibrium. I think you will find very interesting.

ER - COOL!! when can we expect that page up?!! sounds like you guys are really getting some cool stuff together

When i originally bought my Euro Reef skimmer a couple years ago i knew it may have been a bit small for my system. I have since added additional water to the system volume bringing it to about 300 gal. I have a CS8-2 skimmer. Would it be better for me to get another of similar size or replace it with a larger one. I have plenty of room as i have a 70 gal sump and 70 gal fuge in my basement. just thinking would be less expensive to add another small skimmer, plus if something happened to one i'd have at least one running. Not sure though if 2 small = one big

Good news!
Are there any upgrades for my "Old" CS6-1?
It still works great after more than 3 years! :D

Is it true that the return from the gate valve should not be under water as that creates back pressure on the skimmer? I heard that somewhere and i just wanted to see if it's true. I have mine a few inches under right now, so if i need to i'll raise it above.

would a cs80 work well on a 58 gal with a 30 gal sump?total water volume could be at or right around what is recomended for the skimmer.

Chances are this has been addressed somewhere but I can't find it. I'd like to make my ER into a recirc model and I'm not sure the best was to mount the pump. On the ASMs, they drill a hole underneath the original input to the skimmer from the pump and mount the pump horizontally. In this picture (which is a stock ER recirc) the hole is drilled above the original input hole and the pump is mounted vertically. I have problems with the bubble level being low and microbubble exiting the skimmer so I'm leaning towards the stock ER way, but I don't want to waste any of the skimmer height.

There is a 45deg elbow on the out put of the pump. that is my skimmer. Spend the money go for the RC series

uhmm.......ok I'll try again.

I've been back and forth with this. I'm upgrading my Aqua C's to one skimmer. I have a 120 with TSV of about 160 give or take.

I really want the RC180 but price is an issue.

I'm more comfortable with the RC135 price.

Another issue I'm having is the money better invested in one of the CS models such as the CS250. I'm not an expert by any means on skimmers but to me the base rating for the RC135 @$668 is for 135 gallons of skimming. The base rating for the CS250@$728 is for 250 gallons of skimming. Too me the best buy is the 250 gallons.

Is the RC that more effective? Can the RC135/180 pull more gunk than the CS250?

Trying too look into the future hear because I'm sure in a few years the tank will get bigger and more heavily loaded.

hurley - ER can answer better but the RC's are supposed to be able to pull more or more stubborn proteins due to being recirculating...this can allow longer contact time.

if it were me i'd get the CS250. they are 8" diameter, and 30" tall. also they have a bigger pump that sucks more air...BUT THIS IS JUST MO...i'm not a skimmer expert. ER could help you out more

Hey, Fellows thanks for all the info. I have some questions. I just purchased a setup that used a cs8-4 can someone give me some specs on this skimmer? what does the -4 stand for? can i make one pump or both recirculating will the manufacture do that? What size of a tank will it skim medium load. Thanks for the help . Paul
