Got back from Richmond last night and feeding the tanks took a lo in my 33 and saw that the male cardinal wasn't eating, at a closer look his mouth was full of eggs/babies. Not sure how long he has had them but I will have to keep a closer eye out.

Nice!! ...That pair just keeps spitting them out don't they ? .... Let us know how it turns out...You have somewhere that the babies can hide when he lets em out?

Cardinals

Cardinals

The tank is filled with urchins, if I can catch them before dad gets to them I was thinking of placing then in a breeding container in the tank. If all goes well I am sure I will be setting up my 25 again.

I think the Urchins will be perfect...After all that is precisely what they would use in the wild ....That is awesome Ade... Congrats and keep us updated... I also think that there is a tiny blurb in the book "New Aquarium" about raising Cardinal babies...

I got dibs on @ least one of the babies Ade =0)

They are a great looking pair of Banggai Cards..Healthy as could be ...Congrats ade... The one offspring I have is beautiful and getting fairly large now...

I kind of feel bad for the dad, dosen't eat for 2-3 weeks and then when he get rid of the babies the female jumps him again.
A great role reversal. I think he should say he has a headache and she might leave him alone for a night.

Cool. I've been wanting to get a mated pair of Banggai cardinals. I bought one from LiveAquaria that died the first night in QT. I bought three babies from a fellow reefer in Richmond that all disappeared one after another (at night) after a few weeks in my tank. :(

I haven't had very good luck with them.

Well still no babies, but the males looks like he is dipping. I think that I have me a country cardinal, he is a true Franklin County fish.
I read somewere that he spits them out at night can anybody back that up?
I wish that I could take and post pics for you.
Stay tuned

Day 23.
Looked at the fish today and the male opened his mouth enough for me to see a bunch of eyes looking at me. I hope that he lets them go soon because he is looking skinny.

Awesome to hear Ade ... eyes looking back must have felt pretty sweet! ... Any way to section the Cards off from any other possible aggressors? Do you have urchins in that tank? Anyone have any idea how long Bangaii cards usually hold for?

African Cichlid breeders often "strip" the young from the female so she can start eating and get busy again ;) and allowing them to be raised in a seperate tank. Not very natural but if raising alot of young is the priority it seems very effective.

I do have a lot of urchins in the tank but the short spine not long spine. I have another cardinal in that tank with a maroon and a yellow tail damsil. I have read that it usually takes 24 days, depending on temp and other conditions. I would like to raise them but I don't like the idea of stripping them from their dad. If I am lucky enough to be there while they come out I will try and see if I can place them in their own tank.
