Experience with these Par38 bulbs?

I have read a lot on these bulbs but have not used them myself. From what I understand a lot of people have had problems with them. Sounds like almost 50% of these have problems but the other 50% are great after you send the bad ones in for a replacement. Good luck and keep us all posted on how they work out for you if you do end up getting them.

I just did a lot of research on par bulbs as I was in the market for two..I found a thread from someone who got these bulbs and loved them...... for about 3-6 months then the LEDs started going out, problems with the remote etc...IMO go with one of the companies that are trusted and well known... RapidLed is who I went with and I have been very happy...

I have the RAPIDLED PAR 38 bulb over my 10 gallon nano, and it does great. The colors I have are cool white/ blue / royal blue. I love the color and shimmer effect it gives and my corals are doing great. Zoas, palys, mushrooms, GSP, green toadstool leather, kenya tree, and pulsing xenia are doing great. I have 3 SPS species directly under the center of the light in the middle of the tank. The orange Montipora digita is doing great and growing well vertically and encrusting its base, I have one acropora that is doing well, but hasn't grown much, and an unidentified frag which is blue, that has begun to brown out but seems to be fine. I don't recommend blue or white colored SPS under this particular light, but green, red, purple, and orange seem to do great.

The only thing I would add is the 12 bulb fixture I bought is only enough to cover 3/4 of a standard 18" long 10 gallon tank. I plan to buy another bulb in the future if I decide to go heavier on SPS. Or add some stunner strips to aid with the coloration.

Do you have the new one with the 2 UV bulbs as well?

my tank is a 30 cube it is 20x18x21 and two cover it nicely...

From what I've read Ledtric and coralcompulsions (similar bulb but dimmable) would be what I would use, and have the addition of cyan and deep red to the LED mix for coloration (as opposed to RapidLED's/Ecoxotic's/Orphek's). However, this is purely on what I've read and researched, not on personal observation.

Hey thanks for the feedback guys! It's a pay for what you get world out there anymore. Tempting to get the cheaper alternative, but not worth the troubles down the road.

I was looking at lights for my 4gal Evolve and realized these would probably be way too heavy to use a clip on style clamp with this tank. Hanging or desk lamp is not an option. So are there any suggestions for a powerful and good looking led setup that could clip on the back of the tank? Going to grow mostly zoos and Ricordia, mongroves, might do a monti cap up high in the water column.

coralcompulsion also makes a PAR30 which is smaller than the PAR38 so it is much lighter and has 7 leds instead of 12 i personally own both of them and love them. they also sell the clamp fixture and it is pretty lightweight but high quality.

First impressions of the Orphek bulb I mentioned above:

- Well constructed
- Brightness. I was worried it would seem super bright. Over a stock 10 gallon I am using for QT, it looks just right to my eyes at about 6" over the tank. I think it is just right over anything from 5-10 gallons, I wouldn't bother attempting a single bulb of this variety on anything anything closer to 18" x 18" x 18". The Orphek web site says up to 12" x 12" x 12" on the coverage and I think that is a fair assessment. I would not go much bigger than that with a single bulb.
- Color - A touch blue but not obnoxious. On the empty tank, I am picking up the single red LED a bit more than I would like but I suspect that is because the tank is totally empty. I think a stocked tank with rock work, corals, sand, etc. would change that immediately.
- Shimmer / Disco Effect - Not as bad as I have seen on some other LED's and that is with a fair amount of surface aggitation. I really like the level compared to some other LEDs.

I hope to have some corals under it this weekend or early next week.
