What would be the minium gallonage for the following Fairy's to leave peacifully? 1 Pair Flame fairy's, 1 male laboutie, 1 male rhomboid, 1 mystery wrasse, 1 male exquiste, 1 Pair helfrichi fire fish, 1 mandarin. Just would like to know knoew because im planning a new tank and these are the fish currently in my possession. Im hoping a 90 gallon will suffice.
 
Mystery wrasses do not do well with fairy wrasses as Mystery wrasses, while gorgeous, are fairly aggressive, mean fish. Other than that, as long as you have a working refugium for feeding the mandarin, the gallonage of about 100 seems fine.
 
Oh, and fairy wrasses (and flasher wrasses) are excellent jumpers so cover your tank or check the overflow when one goes missing.
 
Regarding Austrailian bathyphilus: I now have two males whereas I formerly had a male and female. Is it desirable to introduce one or more females?
 
snorvich - that is very interesting that your female changed to a male n the presence of another male... no fighting??

i dont see any harm in adding females. although it may spark competition between the 2 males you have now.
 
No, there was no fighting. What was most interesting is that the original female passed the original male and has more male coloration. I am still debating with myself about the addition of females. If I do, it will be at least two and probably three.

I started with 1,4 and now also have two males so 2,3. No fighting but sometimes a little chasing. But only the initial male is spawning with the females.
 
i get in the australian bathyphilus from the coral sea. the females are always TINY (1-2"max) they do very well though. Males are also very small. I shipped a harem (1 male 5 females) to a client for his 400 reef at the store and the male colored up extremely nice.

i doubt you will have any problems. i say do it :) and add as many females as you can.
 
As spawning behavior (actually behavior in general) is of interest, I think that I will try finding 3 small females and try introducing them. Thanks Peter and zemuron. My harem of flames is evolving as well with two of the females looking as if they will evolve into males. I still get spawning behavior about 5 times per month. Perhaps this is a confined space (aquarium) issue?
 
Wow beautiful fish. I hav never had a fairy wrasse in any of my tanks. I am looking to have a couple in my 33g long. Any suggestions would be nice on which are compadable. I saw a bluesided fairy wrasse at one of my LFS's, just wondering wether that is a good specimen.

In your size tank, for maximum enjoyment, I would go with flasher wrasses rather than the larger fairy wrasses. 2 or 3 McCoskers, Carpenters, or Filamented flashers would be nice.
 
I rarely see any flashers or fairy wrasses at my store that i work at.......I heard carpenters grow to about 3 inches. Is that right??

Oh yea and how do you guys think of buying fish online. I have done coral lenty of times but never fish, yet.......
 
Well I have done very well at Live Aquaria, Phishy Business and Twilight Aquatics for fish. The flashers don't get as large as the fairies. The ones I suggested would normally be less than 3 inches (65 mm). If one is limited by tank size, it is best to get high quality fish that are interesting and won't stress your biological capacity. I have a bit over 500 gallons of fairy and flasher wrasses and the flashers are by far my favorites (4 species).
 
Cool, thanks for the info Steve. I will look into getting a couple flashers. But like i said before i saw a bluesided fairy that was about 2 1/3 inches long. Do you think that would be ok ?

Since you are set on getting the solor wrasse, go for it but keep in mind that the recommended tank size is greater than yours and it will lose some coloration over time.. In any case, my opinion is that you won't enjoy it as much as flashers. But if your LFS availability is the prime factor, I guess you will have to get what they have. Be sure it is eating before bringing it home.
 
Snorvich- the number one rule is feed before buying at my store. I would not take anything home that isnt eating.
