do you buy local fish store or have an online place to buy nice reef wrasse?

I purchase all of mine from Live Aquaria off their Divers Den section. I've had great success with all that I have ordered from them! Sign up for the email alerts and you will be notified nightly during the work week when they update the site with new additions. http://www.liveaquaria.com/diversden/index.cfm

I would recommend LA as well for buying Fairies and Flashers online. Some LFSes have a great selection of these wrasses, but some never order any in. I'm also very wary of buying in a situation where it isn't what-you-see-is-what-you-get because the colors can vary so widely with many species. For females, I would just either have your LFS order in however many you want or order them off of a reputable site such as Blue Zoo.

I have used LA for a male Pylei and got this beautiful boy:

He came in very fat and happy. He got a little thin because I wasn't feeding enough, but I upped the feeding and he started filling back out. Unfortunately, he found the carpet despite the lid on the tank. When LA gets in another male of his quality, I'll get the species another try.

Yes, they do jump. Live Aquaria is a superlative supplier of fairy and flasher wrasses including ones that are uncommon.

Definitly jump, and you might need a pretty hefty lid/hood to keep them in. Either that, or one solidly secured to the tank. Mine was just a nice screen that rested on the tank's frame. The wrasse hit it at the right angle to knock the screen aside and still end up on the floor.

Ok, so I think I am hooked on fairies. Just read this entire thread from the beginning. A few pics to submit and also a question...

Red Velvet (rubrisquamis)

Just added a pair of flames.

Male...

And my question... is this really a female? It really looks more like just a small male??

It is a female in transition. If you have a group of females it will become the dominant female or "next male in waiting". Your male is a sub-adult male so there could be conflicts or your male may transition more quickly.

By the way, the C. exquisitus pictured above looks like C. scottorum.

How time flies. I was just looking at this thread and saw that it was back in may since I last posted picture. I'm happy to say I havent lost any wrasses in this time. Thanks to a good screen top.

Just a couple shots of a few of them. My rhomboids are doing well.

Awesome!

on man, bradleyj those rhomboids look incredible! the female looks as good as most males, and the male is perfect. what a pair of specimens you got there. *sigh, looks like i not only need a single male, but now you got me stuck on getting a pretty girl for him too. how do you differentiate the two? just lighter colors?

i just got my first wrasse- a fricken beefy 4.5" lineatus supermale. he's still a little shy but he's eating and he looks more and more comfortable in his surroundings. i'll get my bro's dslr and tripod and take a few shots later.
btw, lineatus owners- do you see a fairly constant color change in your lineatus' colors? particularly the dorsal fin and the face/abdomen? also the blue/purple lines in his face seem to get more radiant with little mood changes and such. pretty freakin awesome!

Snorvich,

Can I ask you a few more questions? Unfortunately the big male did not make it. Spent 2 days in hiding and just pulled him out this morning. Bummed.

As for the female in transition, could I get your opinion? Should I...

1) Leave it as the sole flame. Would it complete the transition to male without the prescence of another female?

2) Find another larger male to add and the female would transition back to female?

3) Add another female to get it to complete the transformation. How long does that typically take?

Thanks for your help,
Will

BTW- Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I don't think they transition back to female. Once they are male they stay that way if I remember correctly.

I would add a female and call it a day.

Flames need to be treated for flukes (twice I am told) before you put them in your tank. I have had terrible luck with flames although they are my favorite fairy wrasse.

Well, terminal males can never transition back to females. Sub-adult males will either remain as is and act like a female in the presence of a terminal male or in the presence of a similar sub-adult male, transition more quickly, or try establish dominance.

Male flame wrasses are difficult shippers. Almost always terminal males will hide, sometimes for up to a week. My limited experience is that 50% of the time they do not make it.

What I did, and what I recommend, is getting a harem of differing size females, add them to your transitioning fish, and you should be fine. BUT, keep in mind that female fairy wrasses, especially flames, are more aggressive than males. You really need to have differing sizes for the females.

This is probably more information than you really want.

Steve,

I will take all the info I can get. I really don't have the room to add a harem of females (wish I could). I was looking to add just one more fish. This is in a 90 gal tank. Taking that into consideration, would you recommend adding just a single female? Would that work? Any idea how long it would take to complete the transformation to male?

Thanks for all your help,
Will

Add a single female but be sure it is NOT a subadult male. That is get a SMALL female and that should force your fish to transition quickly. My guess is less than a month for transition.
