Yes, Thurge, I also noticed that. It looks like someone took it out of water and took an incredibly high defintion photograph then put him back in the water haha. Usually things aren't THAT detailed when taken through water.

There is some debate over the first one . It is listed as C. lyukyuensis (Yellow Flanked fairy)by some and others believe it is a variation of C. cyanopleura .

I have to say that is Probably the most detailed fish photo I have EVER seen.

ctxmonitor ... awesome detailed shot.
You need more pics in your gallery, that's just a phenomenal pic, nevermind wrasses aren't normally easy to photograph either.
I'd love to see more photos, if you've got them.

Pretty darn nice photos overall. I wasted quite a few trying to get a good one of my wrasse this weekend.

In the book Marine Fishes by Scott W. Michael it is listed as a Blueheaded Fairy, Yellowflanked Fairy, and Purplehead "Parrotfish".

Does anyone know if there's a large disparity between the coloration of the male and female labout's fairy wrasse?

Pet Solutions apears to have a female available, however, not not a male. Otherwise, please direct me to other vendors that could potentially have a male labout's fairy wrasse available. These fish seem very difficult to come by.

Hi! Hi! Everyone!

Can anyone tell me what kind of Wrasse this is? It was labeled up in my LFS to be an ORNATE WRASSE. No latin name given. I'm not convinced of this though. The shop in question I use very regularly and they import directly from a wholesaler in Indonisia. Don't know if knowing that might help in it's ID. All the photos I've seen of the Ornate look a little different. However, according to my reference book- 'Fairy & Raindow Wrasses and their relatives' by Rudie H Kuiter- (page 126 if you have one) there is a Wrasse called a Red-scribbled Wrasse - Halichoeres sp 2 of which it says; 'undetermind species appears to be undescribed'. These wrasse are found in Indonesea so maybe? The pic looks very similar except the Caudal Fin on mine is blue and red rather than black. The markings or pattern is almost exact though.

These photos were took whilst acclimatising the fish still in the bag. They look really close to what you see if you were here except they don't pick up a striking metalic sky blue strip along it side that catches the light. This really is WOW!

wady - Sorry I'm not sure what type of wrasse it is, but all I can say is that the colors and patterns are simply stunning!! Nice catch!!

Yes, I'm not sure either. But if the patterns are almost exactly the same, I'd say you probably have that one. Nice catch, thats an awesome looking wrasse.

Thanks for replying.

How intriguing! As it seems it might not be quite so straight forward an ID it's made me want to find out even more. To that end I think it would be fair to start it's own thread. Don't want to highjack this one. However, please if anyone has anything to add, advise or ask I would love to hear from you. I'll add the link to the thread here once I've posted it.

Thanks again reading.

Cheers

aidyb

p.s. Here's the link with more clearer new photos if anyone can help.

Well, for those of you that have been looking for nice fairy wrasses' call Salty Critter http://www.saltycritter.com/. This guy has Ruby Fins I think 5 of em, 6 hawaiin flames and three females
paired up with the supers also exquisite wrasses', a mystery wrasse, and a bunch of real nice fish and mucho nice corals. Almost anything you might want he has it. I tell you it is worth the call or visit .... prices are very reasonable and the store and tanks are kept in excellent condition.. I have been in this hobby 30 years and he is up with the best.... this fyi for you wrasse freaks...

I just ordered a tri-color fairy wrasse and a flameback angel from the marine center.

I had planned on putting the fish in my quarantine tank for a week or two before transferring them to my reef tank but I read in this thread that fairy wrasses can be a little skittish at first.

The owner of the marine center told me to not quarantine the fish as it has "already been quarantined and will likely do more harm than good".

being as this will be my first fairy wrasse I would like to know from you experts on what route should I take with this beautiful fish? Also what do you guys feed and how often do these guys like to eat?

One other thing I know that some wrasses bury in the sand at night. I have read that the fairy wrasses cover themselves in a mucous similar to the parrot fishes. Can anyone give me a little more detail on this.

I can't wait for this fish to arrive. I hope that I can do it justice and keep it happy and healthy for a long long time.

JOHN5900: Thanks. I have two female flame wrasses comming next week from him.

CeeGee: I would not skip the quarentine process. Randy may have quarenteed him, but that doesn't mean that as much fish as they move in and out they couldn't cross contaminate from other fish and tanks. Tri-colors are one of my favorites. I have a trio in one of my tanks. Very hardy fish that eats just about anything.

If your sure hes good, then I wouldn't quartined. I never have and my tanks have been fine. Also, my solar fairy wrasse only eats mysis shrimp, but he'll eat pellets, but he doesn't like them.

can you guys post pics of your solars?

any additional info you guys can give would also be great. I have never had a fairy wrasse and I am not quite sure how durable these guys are. Any mistakes that you have made that you can help me avoid would be appreciated.

I hope the specimen I receive looks good. I dug up some pics today and some looked good and others didn't look so hot. I have never seen one in person so I have no idea what I am getting. All I know is that the pic on the marine centers website is beautiful! I hope that is what arrives.

Both my Tri-Colored and Yellowflanked hid for the first week I had them, with my Tri-Colored being chased by my 6 Line. I had to start them off on live brine shrimp, but now they eat all of the frozen food that I feed them.
