I can't imagine why their colors would be so bad. Maybe try feeding some cyclop-leeze?

Are your water parameters in line?

About your lineatus, how long has it been since you took the mystery out?

Deltec:

All I can say about MarineAquatics.net is that I have purchased numerous fish from them and I have had good fortune with them. I think one thing that many people forget is that they deal only in rare and delicate fish. Fish that have to go through difficult shipping processes to get to them from all corners of the earth. Dealing in rare fish is a risk both supplier and buyer have to take in order to get the huge upside of a one of a kind experience. I currently have a large lineatus from them and it's doing great. While I don't doubt that there have been some bad experiences, I believe that those are in the minority. Unfortunately most of the time only the bad stories get posted and hundreds of good stories never get mentioned.

Congratulations on the new fish. However, your picture of the fish looks more like a pale flame fairy rather than a lanceolatus. I can't make out the tail filament. I'm not doubting it's a lanceolatus. It's just hard to tell from that pic. I know wrasses are hard to take pictures of. If I may suggest, do this. Take your pictures in the early morning when your fish are still asleep. This way they will sit still and you'll be able to get great closeups. The use of a flash will also help bring out colors in the scales that are typically muted in standard light.
I still might be interested in one of these guys if he is gonna receive 4 more.

Your lineatus is a bit traumatized at this point and the truth is he may always be jumpy like that. However if you are able to keep the Mystery away from him for a significant amount of time, he may slowly begin to get used to your presence and the presence of other fish. I don't know if it's possible for you to keep the Mystery away for a long time becuase I'd imagine you'd like to house them together, but try this. First rearrange your landscape around (LR's & coral) if possible. Then give your Lineatus two months alone in the tank without the Mystery. After the two months the lineatus hopefully should feel confident and in command of his territory in the tank and more adept at standing up to the Mystery. With that said, let me just say that mystery's come from the same family as sixlines and they are sometimes as pugnacious as their cousins. Sometimes they will adjust to new fish and sometimes they won't. By displacing the Mystery from his home and changing the structure of the landscape he will be forced to adjust to the Lineatus this time. I think that may do the trick. However if you see the Mystery beating up on him again then you'll have a tough decision to make......unless you have a nice second tank. One final note if they do get along, make sure that any other fairy wrasses you buy from that point on are significantly larger than the Mystery. If they are small, the mystery will kill them.

As far as the Rosy goes, feed cylopeeze and a variety of mysis, krill, and plankton and that should help out.

thank you very much bronco. you have given me great advice. i currently have the mystery in my refugium and he can stay there as long as he needs because i really want my lineatus to go back to normal. also, i will try to take a pic of my rosy fin so you can see what he looks like because he has no color what so ever and he is really not very pretty to look at. but thank you again.

Another Question: Do you buy all of your wrasses locally or do you order online? If you order online where? I am in search of a Super Male Pink Margin and Hawaiian Flame and Pyle's Wrasse.

Thanks for responding back bronco. I am a big fan of your fairy wrasse collection. When I bought the lanceolatus, I borrowed there fairy wrasse book and did match it up to the one in the book. I know my picture is bad but when I have time I will getr a better pic of him. The lance tail is more evident when he moves. When he is still the tail looks like all the other fairy wrasses. He is eating great, and so far the only other wrasse to give him dirty looks is my flame wrasse. but they kind of ignored each other right now.

I am planning on buying a lineatus from marineaquatics.com I just wanted to make sure from someone that he does sell healthy stuff. I really wish my lineatus and pyle didn't die cause of that heater malfunctioning. Its kind of discouraging when you see your favorite fish die cause of a piece of faulty equipment you trust :(

where are you guys getting your pyle wrasses? i have been looking and looking online and cannot find a place that has them. is there any online?

I bought mine at my local LFS. He gets in all the rare stuff. unfortunately mine perished with a bad heater :(

Sethd12:

Before I left on my vacation a week ago Marineaquatics.net still had 3 more Pyle's left. I looked at his web site and I can see that he hasn't posted them on there. I believe hat with the holidays they have been off quite a bit. So check with them, they may still have some more. Also, I'm gonna call them becuase I want to check the status on another fish I requested which hopefully will be available sometime in the first two weeks of the new year.
By the way, outside of Marineaquatics.net I have also purchased via:

Jeff's exotic fish / exoticfish.com = Great specials on solar fairies and Goldbar fairies on very frequent basis. However their strength is corals so usually go to them for corals and just add a wrasse on top of the order if something is available that I'd like to get.

Saltwaterfish.com = I purchased here just a couple of times. They will have flame fairies, flashers, goldbars, social fairies and other basics. Free shipping for orders over $75 (I haven't checked this in a while/could've changed) and their packaging was excellent.

Marinecenter.com & Liveaquaria.com = Offer great quality and healthy fish with excellent packaging for shipments. However, I consider their prices very bloated. Specially marinecenter. I'd say that liveaquaria is a larger outfit and they will stand behind their orders better.

Just a FYI on prior experiences with online vendors. Still Marineaquatics is so close to me and they go after stuff none of these places would think of going after, that I use them most of the time.

I'm glad to hear your new fish is doing well. Yeah, I look forward to other pictures of him soon. I've never owned one of these and I am interested in them.

Will my Temminck wrasse eat peppermint shrimp? I am going to get some more and he is a big wrasse and i am not sure about him?

i currently have my male lineatus in a large specimen cup with holes in it for him to calm down and i noticed that he has a very large gash in his side. it almost looks like he is broken in half. what should i treat him with to help heal this wound?

sethd12,

That does not sound good at all. I suggest you take the fish out of the main tank all together and place him in a QT setup. If you have to set up a new QT because you don't have one already running, simply get a 10 glass aquarium at any pet shop and a cheap $30 hang behind filter at petsmart . Then add some water from your main tank into the QT. Maybe 5 gallons. The other five can be fresh saltwater. Get the temperature somewhat even with your main tank and then add the fish with slow acclimation. Next go to the LFS and pick up a box of Maracyn2 (Saltwater version) and follow the instructions on box for treatment. Make sure you pick up the saltwater version of Maracyn and not the freshwater. This product has a lot vitamins that help the fish. Also stimulates appetite if that has been lost. I can't say this is a sure cure because I can't see your fish. But if he has an open gash then the maracyn will help heal the wound. It's also great for popeye issues. However, I'm concerned that wound is actually related to some sort of a parasite problem.

bronco7777, i just got a scotts fairy wrasse(australian) from liveaquaria. it arrived in excellent condition and i was wondering how long you kept your new arrivals in a cup before letting them into the tank. he is currently swimming at all sides of the cup to try to get out into the tank but i wanted to check with you before i let him out. i will also post a pic as soon as possible.

haha, i know!! but this was ordered before the accident happened. i would never have ordered another one when i had one that was injured.

Seth,

If he appears ready and excited to come into the tank and he's eating well, and nobody seems to be attacking at him, then you can let him go. But I'd still recommend you QT him before you let him go.

I think you should try to get all the wrasses you have now healthy before you start ordering more!

Seth how nice was the specimen from liveaquaria. I saw there prices for the aust. scotts and I was interested. Are they nice colorful males? Or young juveniles they send?
