I want a small fan to cool my mh but I don't want to pay a fortune. Is there a small, approx. 4" fan that will plug in and works good near salt? My husband looked at radio shack, but he couldn't find any with wall plugs. I found a $5 fan at Walmart that is made of mostly plastic parts, but it needs an ac plug, which it doesn't come with. The 72 hour battery life would be a joke on a tank.

Go over to home depot and get a fan that clips on and plugs into the wall. Point across the light and turn on. This should remove enough heat to cool things off. Is your light housed in a canopy or open?

You can get 4 inch computer fans and then a 12V adapter. Total cost is like $30. VERY easy to put together.

I have read several threads that mentioned fans for under $10, but I can't find them. I would like to stay in that range. Right now it is open, but I will probably be adding a canopy when I build the new stand.

I use a Lasko fan from WlMrt.
VERY quiet, sits right above my sump and does an excellent job at cooling

Are those the ones that need the ac adaptor? If so, where do I get an adaptor? Quiet is a big plus in my book!

I don't know that I would trust anything clip on that cost $5 attached to my tank =\ I can just see it falling in.

I don't think I will trust the clips, but zip ties hold well and are easy to use.

WalMart has a 7" clip on two speed fan for $8. Ace hardware has the same fan for $14.
4" DC computer fans like the Vantec Stealth can be found for $11 at newegg.com and a variable voltage power supply can be found for $5-$10 at WalMart, Radio Shack , Frys Electronics or possibly Harbor Freight Tools.

Would a 120mm computer fan work? They're about 4 3/4". You'll have to do a little DIY, but you basically just need a DC power adapter. If you have an old power adapter from a cordless phone, those are usually 12v. If not, you can usually pick one up pretty cheap from Walmart, Radio Shack or online. I'm a big fan of the generic power adapters you can buy most anywhere that allow you to select a voltage. That gives you the added bonus of being able to control the speed of your fan.

It's pretty easy to do, involving just a couple simple wire splices, and since computer fans are generally all or mostly plastic, they work very well. Let me know if that might fit your purposes, and I'd be happy to walk you through it.
