Fate or Torture ?

Kharn

MANTISMAN
G'day all viewers

Everyday I wake up and go into my work place and do 1 thing first =) I hop online and bring up this site along with another LOCAL site (within Aus and specifically MASA) anyway this morning when I hoped on I saw to my surprise and torture someone is selling a mating pair of Gonodactylaceus graphurus......not only is the seller in australia but he is in my SUBURB!!

Fate or Torture

I quote

******************************************************************

I have a proven breeding pair of Mantis Shrimp (Gonodactylus graphius) for sale or trade. These are cherished pets and will only consider selling/trading to those within the Brisbane area. This species is best kept in a specimen tank as they will feed on animals that constitute CUC.

I have spawned this pair sucessfully several times and am only selling as work commitments have resulted in less time availible to devote to my hobby.

You can see this pair spawning at the following link:

And the hatched spawn are at this location:

What ya's think!?!

I do NOT like to buy on impulse.......:hmm3:

Looks like a chance of a lifetime. Go for it.

Don't say that !!!! ..... lol rite now I have no where to house them besides the tank I have setup for the L.mac's that are coming.... I COULD but don't like the idea, I COULD divide the tank with white egg crate I have seperating the 2 species BUT it would look pritty ugly....not too mention there is no guarantee that would work...

EDIT: your rite about once in a lifetime opportunity...I have never seen or knew of smashers pairing like some spearers do ?

Well, if you can provide them with a wonderful home, and are wanting to try to breed them... then I say go for it. If not, then there's probably someone out there who wants to, and I'd say leave them for them.

Yeah...I got my heart set on the L.mac's....but a PAIR of SMASHERS mating does sound like a very interesting thing from what I have seen from videos on Youtube along with the info I have read about smashers mating, I don't think I ever came across a pair of smashers staying together after mating....usually its an open weight boxing match after the kinky stuff is over....:rolleye1:

Get it! Its more interactive then a L. maculata! Then when you get your L. mac move the Gonodactylaceus graphurus pair to their own smaller tank. Dude you got the bank for it. Why not! Get it :::: small voice is telling you to get it :::: and egg crate is nothing to a smasher. You need an acrylic wall and that alone installing in your already set up system. Would be a pain! As i recall you were even willing to do a custom tank for the L. mac. So get them but them in your current set up and then you get a smaller tank set it up right next to your big tank. :::: the small voice is getting louder :::: "Gets me!! Get us! We need a very dedicated owner!" If I could travel through a star trek transporter to where they are, i wouldn't hesitate on getting them.

Just to be accurate, they are not spawning, they are copulating. Spawning implies that eggs and sperm are released and fertilization occurs outside the body. Stomatopods have internal fertilization.

Roy

Dr Roy, what are the chances of the hatchling surving?

And what do you feed them?

I do not know Kharn backgound. So basic question, how much work would be involved in this setup to be successful?

Not good. It has only been done a hand full of times and never with this species. The larvae are highly cannibalistic and must be housed individually. Also, they usually will only eat live food such as rotifers and copepods. I keep them in individual cups (100 ml) and feed and change the water daily. It takes at least a couple of minutes per larva. The last time I reared larvae (G. chiragra), I started with 100 and after 4 weeks when they settled out as postlarvae, I had two left. I would guess that I invested 50 hours total and a couple of hundred dollars in live food.

Roy

Thanks Dr. Roy.

Well Kharn, let us know what you decide? I guess I would go for it, depending how much they will cost to buy the pair.

Guess i should update since some were looking for it =)

The original pair were no longer for sale but I did get a pair of smaller Smithii's that live together happily I got them for free! =D
