Favia or Favites

Is there an easy way to distinguish Favia from Favites? I think I read that one has a shared wall and the other does not but I cannot remember which or recall where I read that.

I'm mostly interested in the general answer, but here's a picture of the frag in question (click link for pic): http://cl.ly/image/2h3z3S3s1O3y

Thanks!

Kyle

They're similar, but the walls of the corallites in Favites are shared.

I would also say favites, but also look at platygyra, but difference is hard to tell until they get all puffy and show feeding tenticles.

Oh man... Kyle, I have tried to identify my Favia/Favites corals for MONTHS, and everytime I get an answer on how to tell what they are someone comes and proves the others wrong...
It's like trying to identify a chalise coral... You never really know what you got ;)

I can't tell the difference from looking at pics, they all look like they have shared walls to me. I'd love to see some kind of drawing or something LOL. This has been driving me crazy for over a year now!

Thanks for the ID, pics, and descriptions.

I hadn't even considered platygyra but my frag is a dead ringer for the one in that first pic. Now if I could just take pictures like the ones on Yahoo.

KRAZE, very nice, NOW I can see what is meant by not shared walls. Thank you!

no problem :) Brains became my fav coral species very quick, before even had my own tank lol so i did tons of reading on them and realized how many diff variety's there are, and i still learn more every day!

There's just so many wrong names/IDs on the internet it's hard to fight your way through them without some tips. When I'd google either of those I'd get almost only favias in the results, that's why I was confused.
