Feeding BTA

My two perc's hosted to my BTA, I was feeding the BTA, should I quit feeding it ?

I have read that the clowns will feed ther host Anemone do they need more?

You should feed your BTA once or twice a week. Clowns bring foodto eat in the anemone, so it seems like its feeding the anemone. Some clowns doesnt do it though.

Well it depends I think. I feed my fish with enriched mysis half the time, and flakes the other half, but when I drop a chunk of shrimp from the supermarket in there, the clown seems to know that it's for the anemone, and grabs it in his mouth and practically shoves it in the anemone's mouth then leaves it alone. It seems like pretty symbiotic relationship. But wether your clown does this or not, I still think you should feed your anemone. Some feed it once every couple of weeks, some every couple days, you should get the feel of it after a while. When I fed mine a bit too much, it would shrivel up and "poo" alot more often.

I use wooden skeewers, just stick the food on the end and touch the anemones tentacles, it should take from there. Don't try to force food into the mouth you could damage the anemone.

I have a 10cc syringe with an 18" piece of rigid airline at the end I use for spot feeding everything including my bta. Works real good. Also allows you to suck it back up if it floats away.

Ok, now what about the type of food? I mean, I have a bag of frozen shrimp in my freezer, would that be what I really need? :D

As long as its Raw shrimp it would be ok. How long have the shrimp been in your freezer? If its been over a month the shrimp is too old and not fit for anemones.

yeah the shrimp has been in there for quite a while. It's still edible for human consumption, is there a reason why it would be no good for an anenome? just curious

I too am curious about not feeding shrimp that has been in the freezer too long. I have done it before with no ill effects but don't want to risk any problems...

a simple rule, if you won't eat it, don't feed it to your fish.

you should feed your anemone. Do not rely on your fish to feed it. Anything it gets from them is accidental. For me the fish always stole from the anemone.

I think small raw frozen easy peal is the way to go. use some chicken shears to cut up the shrimp. How much to feed for me depends on two things: 1) how much will the anemone consume with out being overloaded with food, 2) how fast to I want it to grow and split.

if you want fast growth and potential for spitting, then feed it one small shrimp cut in pieces per day. you can always know you are feeding too much by seeing if the anemone spits out the food several hours later. I am no expert but I would say you can feed as much as you like as long as the pieces as small so as not to damage the animal internally, and so long as it is not spitting it back out.

good luck, Kevin

couldnt put it better myself. the clowns dont really feed the anemone per se but just bring food there for staorage so they can eat it and then the anemone will eat it out from under them. as for feeding... anything raw is fine everyone debates on how much to feed i personally feed mine once or twice a week whatever it seems like it needs and my rbta does fine.

now as far as the shrimp are concerned, I have been taking the "shell" off of them. Do i really have to? or will the anenome take care of that by itself?

I have heard both sides of the argument. One side says, take the shell off, as it can damage the inside of the anemone. Other side says, leave it on, shrimp in the wild don't take their shells off before they skinney dip.

I take the shell off myself, but I am wondering if I am doing a disservice to the anemone for not letting it digest the shell too. I do not know, but it takes only a little imagination to think that the shell might contain different concentrations of nutrients that the flesh of the shrimp.

I would say, watch for three things: 1) be gentle when feeding the anemone, let it take the food in, don't you push it into the mouth. If it don't want it then don't feed it, 2) if you obey #1, you can leave the shell on, 3) if you have an anemone that is a fussy eater (it won't readily take the shrimp), then take the shell off because you often can entice the anemone by rubbing the shrimp around then mouth area for anywhere from 15 seconds to 2 minutes. You will see the mouth swell and eventually provide a place for the food to go. But to do this you don't want any pointy pieces of shell.

Good luck, Kevin

Thanks. Now I came home today, and I anenome has "shrunken" (is that a word?) back into the rock. He is close to his "foot." Granted I put him in on Friday, he may still be stressed, but he has been doing great since I put him in. Is something wrong?

I doubt it. Anemones contract all the time. It is one way of expelling wastes for them. Wait a day of two, he will inflat again. Just keep the water quality good and gently moving around him.

Also, as you pointed out, he may still be upset by his move.

If after a week goes by, then maybe you can start to get worried. But all you can really do is keep the environment up (good water, good flow, good light) and hope he eats.

Good luck, Kevin
