feeding raw shrimp to anemone question

I want to feed my gig to hopefully color him up some more. I'm going to go to the store and buy some fresh shrimp. Should I peel off the shell or leave it on? Can I just buy already frozen shrimp, or should I just buy the fresh shrimp? Thanks

You can buy the frozen - it's fine. Just make sure it's not already cooked.

I realize that they don't get that large of shrimp in the wild, but if they do catch a crustacean, no one peels it for them. So, I leave the exoskeleton on. I don't have a gig (I have a haddoni), but I have never found any exoskeleton remains.

If you do go the 'feeding them shrimp' route, I encourage you to search for "US farmed or wild caught shrimp." Just look on the package.

Cheers
Mike

Just follow the "raw food" advice. If you wouldn't eat it - don't feed it to your anemone. All raw foods have to be FRESH without any hint of bacteria.

I currently feed my giganteas with raw grocery store shrimp that I shell myself under running tap water then freeze for use over a few weeks.

That said, IMO there is a risk of any raw food causing a bacterial problem. I've lost anemones (not giganteas) that I attribute to such issues in the past. Also, too frequent of feeding of my larger gigantea leads to its mouth being open more of the time, and heavy feeding seems to eventually lead to it expanding and contracting to the point where I was very worried about it. I stopped feeding it for a while and that stopped.

So IMO, feeding is a risky venture, that may be worth it in some circumstances, but maybe not in all. I still daily feed my smaller gigantea because I want it to grow and color up as much as possible.

its better to feed your S.gigantea a silver side one every two weeks. If you feed it shrimp take off the shell soak the shrimp in selcon or boyds vitamins fir a few houts prior ti feeding. yiur S.Gigantea will get better with color and size....Good Luck...does anyone no what are good online vendors for Giganteas?
Thank You

I and many others have lost nems due to silversides, so that has been off my list for a while.
I normally feed my nems scallops, like a 1/4 of a piece, about once a month.

I never knew silversides could do that as i never had a problem when i was keeping my s.gigantea. when i get a a new one i will keep in mind about the siversides.
Thanks

No sweat, I used to feed silvers too, my giant crispa would take 2 down no problem.
I first saw Toddrtrex post about them being an issue, and then several others said same thing.
I didn't pay much attention until I lost 3 healthy LTA's immediately after a silver feeding(and small pieces to each)
All 3 detached, deflated, and melted pretty much over night.
I haven't used them since, I think shrimp or scallops are a much safer choice.

Thanks for all the info. I used to feed silversides until I heard about potential deaths. I got my gig off of Dr. Mac's site and it arrived in perfect condition. I'll try the shrimp..I'll only be feeding a small chunk twice a week until he colors up.

For new nems I prefer smaller foods like mysis until they have settled in.
You can actually stress them by overfeeding.
Spot feeding varies among most of us, some do once a week, I do once a month(w/ mysis picked up at fish feedings) and some people don't spot feed at all.

I've had my Gig for over a year, I had to do some drastic lighting period changes to kill of dino's in my tank. As I increase the photoperiod, I need to provide feedings so it can grow its zxoo back.

yum, lucky nem!

i personally wont ever go near silversides again, i stick to scallops and raw shrimp soaked in some selcon. I dont feed very often (maybe once every few weeks), but when i do i remove the exo from the shrimp. thats just how ive always done it though... (and im a superstitious baseball player :D)
