Fiji Pictures

Thanks Ziyaadb. Being from J'Berg, have you had a chance to explore your own backyard (relatively speaking) .... i.e., Maputaland and/or Mozambique's reefs? If so, what are they like? Similar to Fiji? Any pictures?

Thank you Squanto804, Yousmellsfishy, Rennsport, D'kingfisher, Love83Blue, and Elan L. Yes, Fiji has some amazing tables. HUGE tables! Some of the greatest sized are not photogenic, unfortunately, being too large for me to be close enough to capture color.

Answers:

(1) Camera: Olympus Stylus 1030 SW (Shock Waterproof). This camera is very small. It can go underwater up to 10 meters without a housing. It can also take video.

(2) I've been asked by quite a few people about Fiji in private messages. A good primer on the island group can be found at http://www.fijiguide.com
If you want more information, contact me and I'll guide you further or direct you towards others that might help you.

(3) More pictures... hmmm... I wish my underwater housing had not broken its seal, because I could give you more, but alas... foggy is not what you or I want to see. The following video was shallow enough for me to take off the housing so I could shoot without the foggy interference. Things to notice in the video: (a) most SPS dominated reefs are the domain of chromis and damsels; (b) chemical warfare between the colonies is clearly visible as white caulk-like borders.

Dear AMW, Lex 211, and MFD 574,

Thank you very much for your kind comments.

Thanks to the Thanksgiving holiday, here are some more pictures:

This picture reminds me of a reef under 20K radiums:

I redid my original video - shorter and smoother clips:

unbelievable pics we have been talking about going to fiji but continue to go to hawaii this year we go to maui last was curacoe it was ok but looked nothing like fiji great pics

Dear Fishybudguy, Reefdigger, and Jinxville,

Thanks for the comments! I'm glad you like the photos.

Fishybudguy: Since I'm in CA, Hawaii was my easy annual underwater fix - until I went to Fiji. Hawaii has got some great underwater spots - beautiful geologic shapes, turtles, fish species - but the coral is just not there. It's too bad - because I prefer the 5 hr. Hawaiian flight to the 10 hr. Fijian flight. Hawaii's also got great surf for boogie boarding, surfing, or bodysurfing right from the shore. Fiji's spectacular surf spots are way off-shore: you feel like you're surfing in the middle of the ocean. The biggest plug for Fiji is the lack of development and the spectacular people. Fiji is the South Pacific experience.

I will post more pictures after my internet connection is fixed by AT&T. It's brutal right now.

Hey thats great, I too live in Calif, San Francisco. I went to Kona this year diving, it was ok, convenient. I am planning on diving in Philippines like Anilao which I have researched a bunch and it seems like a great place. My girlfriend has family in PI so its an easy target.

Beyond the Philippines I am also looking for another place to go and Fiji seems promising. I love the concept of snorkelling for hours on end in very relaxed rich waters. Its only 10 hours? Well, its on my list now. Whens the season? Any other pointers?

Thanks

Dear Genomik,

Hmmm... the time to visit Fiji is dependent upon your tolerance to "cold" and rain. In general, the Fijian winter months are the driest and coldest (June, July, August), but this is only a generality. Rain in Fiji, is like fog in San Francisco. There's no guarantee of a full day of sunshine, but most days have at least a few hours of crystal, beautiful weather. As for temperature, the water dips to 80 degrees Farenheit in June and down to 78 to 76 in July and August. If you want to swim/snorkel in bathwater (83-84 degrees), visit Fiji from December through May.

Above water, it's humid (no surprise, eh?). Air temperatures during Fiji's winter are in the high 70's (really nice) and during Fiji's summer, the temperatures are in the high 80's to low 90's (I've never visited during a Fijian summer - but I've been told it feels like a D.C. summer). Fiji's cyclone season is from December through March. A cyclone, in fact, just passed through Fiji on Monday (category 2).

Some of the best accommodation deals are found between January and March (cyclone season). Airfare deals, though, come out in March to stimulate US summer travel. Too bad there's not consistency.

If you have more questions, just write . . .

Scott

What are your recommendations for locations/resorts? Looking for great diving at a budget price. Most diving bang for the buck. Thanks for posting everything: fantastic stuff!
