filter socks(maintenace)

can anyone tell me the proper way to clean filter socks? ive rinsed them in tap water n bleached them, let dry and rinsed again (minus the bleach for 2nd rinse) but wouldnt that be adding the things that we try not to from tap water?

I have one in the wash right now. I'm out of bleach so I'm just doing a couple cycles on hot. IMO, I can't imagine that any risidual tap water on a rinsed and spun filter sock could be at all detrimental to your system.

FWIW I don't use them and rely more on flow and the skimmer. I di try one for a while.

I use them because my sump is really hard to clean in my current tank. Once I'm done with my flat roof, I should be able to focus back on my new build... (or so I keep telling myself) and might not use them.

I always throw them in the washing machine on hot for 2 cycles. I never use bleach to clean them.

Ben, On average how often do you have to clean them?I do hate sump cleaning and might consider a sock again. I also worry about trapped zooplankton though.

i have 4 sets, change them every other day, then wash once a week with one cup of bleach then another cycle with just water..... never had any problems and my sumps are always clean

I have 5 or 6 and probably use 3 in a two week span. They get pretty nasty around 4 days (at 400 GPH in a ~70-80 gallon system).

I agree that filtering zooplankton is a drawback.

The filter socks are a pain, but they're the lesser of two evils for me Maybe if you used them on and off you could reduce the sump maintenance without significantly impacting zooplankton?
