Finally an easy solution to bryopsis!

Our local reef club is passing around a sea hare right now. It worked GREAT in my tank. I have seen occurences where elevated Mg did not affect the Bryopsis at all, so be weary there.
Ferric Oxide, and proper water changes of about 10% daily with manual removal works too, it's just alot more involved.

Elevated magnesium probably is never the actual herbicide.
I used magflake and mag sulfate to raise my mag to 3000ppm (!!!) and it did absolutely nothing.
Then I did some water changes to bring that down some, tried the Tech M, and it worked like a charm, I just didn't use it long enough.
Tech M (and possibly Seachem Reef Advantage Magnesium) has an impurity in it that kills the stuff. I'm pretty sure it's never the magnesium

i ordered to small and my 100g reef went thru a bottle in a few days rofl i have to order again im going for 1 gallon now
anyone find a cheaper solution yet maybe raise mag to 1500 with espom and keep them there with tech m?
how long should you keep you mag above 1500 before you dont have to worry as much
dont buy the 16 oz bottle i did stupid mistake the next size up is 64oz and like 6$ more

Gofor100 is right about the magnesium. It's the stuff in Tech M that is NOT magnesium that's doing the work.
I tried both epsom salts and mag chloride, raised my mag to 3,000(!!!!!) and it did abso-freaking-lutely nothing.:sad1:
Tech M killed it, but I ran out too quick and assumed the bryopsis was dead.
I now have 2 gallons in the mail to me. Should be here tomorrow or Monday.
Will dose it slowly, maybe just enough to raise the mag 25-50ppm per day. Should be easy on the whole system.
Hi guys, I having the same problem with this algae 34G Solana. I'm planning to use the Tech-M theory and perhaps buy some lettuce sea hare to do a double punch on this. Do you guys think the sea hare would be OK with the high levels of MG? And I have a Red Fromia Starfish, do you think the starfish would be OK or should I remove it from the tank?

The sea hare would probably be fine but also be fairly useless against bryopsis. Bryo does not taste good to most herbivores--- only occasionally does someone say they ate any bryopsis.
You'll probably have better luck researching on of the lettuce nudibranches---- Elysia cristata has been said to eat bryopsis more consistenly.
If the Tech M works, though, you're likely to run out of bryopsis in about a week anyhow and then your sea hare/lettuce will starve.

Thanks guys, thats what I meant to say in my previews post lettuce nudi. Now what about having a Starfish in my tank? I have a Fromia Starfish and I know that starfish are very sensible invert, perhaps the most sensible to any changes in water.
Well now about dossing? my tank is a 34G Solana, and I keep my Mg at 1300 using brightswell aquatic Mg. I'm going to buy the Tech M today so how much should I add to raise to the recommended level to kill the bryopsis. And how fast should I raise it and for how long? And how many bottles would I need?

1 mL per gallon raises it around 18-20ppm, and that's what I'm doing in my system right now.
I'm on day two so it's too early to say one way or the other, but I don't recommend what I did the first time. I raised it by 100ppm per day, but I soon hit an unsafe mag level (was well over 2400 ppm) and I ran out of Tech M>
I think 20-50ppm per day should be fine. I'm "target feeding" the stuff to the bryopsis and then leaving all my pumps off for about an hour, hoping the active ingredient is quickly having its effect on the bryopsis. I'm not sure if it's helping yet, too early to tell.

They can be sensitive.
I lost two brittle stars when I was dosing heavily with the mag chloride/sulfate mix (thinking it would work like Tech M but it didn't). They were "rescues" and not in good shape to begin with.
I have two urchins that I'll be watching closely while I'm doing the Tech M thing this week.

hello all, great thread and thank you ! So, I started dosing Tech M for bryopsis eradication 2 days ago. I can already see that the once green fonds are starting to show signs of withering and am happy with the results thus far. I have a question however regarding zoas and this approach. I have noticed a dulling of color in my zoa colonies as well as some polyp extension issues. Has anyone else experienced this and has there been long term damage to zoas with this treatment? Thanks in advance!

^Yes, definitely. I'm having that right now--- eagle eyes are kinda browned out, and my fire-n-ice and dragon eyes have faded a lot.
Never assume the bryopsis is gone when it melts away. Mine is still there in small amounts, and I'm going to keep dosing the Tech M at lower levels (20ppm every other day) and just do big water changes to help keep up with the crazy amount of mag.

Not died, just brown.
I did lose (this time, and last time I tried Tech M) an octo frogspawn. First it was a pink/orange variety, and this time it was a green one. Both were a single head, so no huge loss.
Otherwise the other varieties of frogspawn I have are doing great. Several SPS are browned out (ORA Green Bird's nest, regular green monti cap). Last time, my hydnophora browned out on me, but not this time for some reason.
